USA. AECOM to design new port in Durban, South Africa

Transnet has awarded AECOM a US$3.4-million contract to initiate the design of the Durban Dig Out Port in South Africa, a brownfield redevelopment for a new seaport complex that will serve as a gateway for containers destined for the Greater Durban Area and the Gauteng Industrial Complex and accommodate the region?s liquid bulk and motor vehicle handling.

AECOM Technology Corporation announced today that Transnet has awarded the company a US$3.4-million contract to initiate the design of the Durban Dig Out Port in South Africa. The Durban Dig Out Port project is a brownfield redevelopment for a new seaport complex that will be constructed by excavating nearshore vacated land.

When complete, the new port complex will serve as a gateway for containers destined for the Greater Durban Area and the Gauteng Industrial Complex as well as accommodate the region?s liquid bulk and motor vehicle handling.

?AECOM?s connection to Durban and South Africa as well as its experience delivering creative design services for major ports around the world, such as the New Port Project in Doha, Qatar, provide the right background to make this project a success,? said AECOM?s Abbas Sarmad, global port leader. ?We are proud to partner with Transnet in providing services for this innovative new port complex in South Africa.?

As part of the contract, AECOM will provide concept and pre-feasibility design services for the new port and container terminals, including all associated infrastructure relating to its operation. A critical aspect of the design will be ensuring the sustainability of the port throughout the construction phase as well as all of the operational phases of its development.

The project is a key element of South Africa?s 2050 vision for the long-term development of Durban as the country?s premier port city.
