Family Literacy Day: an "off-beat" list of ideas for families | clubmom

Okay so your kids have been read to since they were in the womb, you role-model positive reading behaviours at home (your kids see you read the news, for example), and you encourage all kinds of fun literacy activities at home.

So what?s left for you to celebrate the upcoming Family Literacy Day? Lots actually, and it doesn?t even have to include a book! (Not that I?m encouraging you not to read?)

1. ?Build your house from the ground up

I?m not talking about building a tower with Lego blocks. I?m talking about developing a strong oral language foundation. Oral language develops before writing and reading development. The simplest thing you can do with your family? Storytelling. If you go back far enough in your memories, you may remember some of those gems that were told to you. Some held lessons, (like traditional folktales often do), some told of a family member?s experience in a humorous way, others were spooky. Storytelling can be shared with many people at the same time making it perfect for a family. It can be done anywhere and people can start from scratch if there aren?t any stories in your memory bank.

2. ?Paint the town red, green and purple

The Pre-school/ Kindie set might appreciate some creativity on your part. Have them write in unusual places:

  • in the snow with a water spritzer filled with water and some food colouring (or beet juice)
  • with a paint brush and plain water on the side of a building (they love watching it dry up in the summer heat)
  • in the bathtub with non-toxic bath crayons
  • making words threaded on beaded necklaces with letter beads
  • with their food (e.g. dough, pasta ? see an old post?of mine for ideas)

3. ?Be an Adbuster

Any definition of Literacy must include Media Literacy. Your kids are BOMBARDED with hundreds of images and media influences by the hour. It is up to us as parents ? though schools are doing an amazing job ? to deconstruct what our kids take in. It runs the gamut from body image stereotypes to understanding what we are being told we should buy. There are some pretty good sites?that deal with media awareness. Given its plenitude in our lives ? packaging, billboards on street corners, commercial jingles, backpacks with promotional material and product placement in movies ? there is no shortage of material to choose from when you want to chat with your kids about Media. A walk down any busy street with the kids and you can chat media for hours (if they let you). mediasmarts.ca?has some resources for teachers that parents should have a look at too.

4. ?Board games, duh.

Okay so this isn?t off-beat, just fun. But making one up is, so get the kids the materials they need and guide them if they wish. Or if you prefer,?skip the board-making and make up a game you can play on-the-go, like I did here.

5. ?Belt it out!?

Get out the karaoke machine (if you are cheesy enough to have one). Songs, lyrics?they are poems. ?My daughter loves to find her favourite singers on Youtube. Since I don?t yet let her watch videos, she finds the lyrics. She?s reading poems (lyrics) for enjoyment. Double-win. This is an all-family event, so get everyone together and celebrate your love of lyrics, song and poetry.

6. ?Make an infographic.

If you don?t know what infographics are, then consider this?your media education. Kids can pick a topic, generate data (they have to do some?research?mua ha ha says the evil teacher) and publish it. They can then be shared on all social media with family and friends. You can try making one at?http://visual.ly/ and view some ways that others have used information and data to get a message out.

7. ?Make cool how-to manuals on Snapguide

In school, we teach kids how to do procedural writing so many kids will have background knowledge about what goes into how-to guides. Snapguide?has a web-based, visual format, is easy to use, and can be shared through social media to friends and family. Kids can make anything based on their interests (how to make a Lego car, how to paint stripes on you nails, how to make coconut muffins, how to knit a hat, how to do a dance move, whatever?). ?You?ll need photos or video footage and the template makes it easy for you?to insert titles, materials and instructions.

This list could be as long a Canadian winter, but report cards are a-calling, so maybe YOU can post some of your favourite off-beat ideas here too!

Managing Anxiety By Accepting Your Brain's Alarm System | Your ...

By Bob Livingstone

brainThere have been dramatic studies about the science of the brain, how it works and how we can deal with our emotional pain in new ways. There have been many articles and books written in the last few years about the different parts of the brain, how they function, and how they can heal emotional anguish.

This article will focus on the workings of the part of the brain called the amygdala. I am concentrating on this part of the brain because it has a huge impact on our emotional lives.

The amygdala is a necessary part of our brain that has kept us safe throughout history. It becomes activated when you are in real danger. It triggers the fight or flight response. If you see a wild dog running towards you, your amygdala will mobilize and you will take whatever action is necessary to protect yourself.

Without the amygdala, we would not be able to prepare for peril, so it is a necessary part of our being. However, sometimes the amygdala can become over active due to situations that create post-traumatic stress syndrome. (PTSD)

The amygdala plays a part in the creation and storage of memories associated with emotional events. The amygdala also plays a role in the formation of many fear responses including freezing, rapid heartbeat, increased respiration and stress hormone response.

If you are a victim of child abuse, if your parents had a hostile divorce, if someone close died when you were young, if you were a soldier in a war zone, or if you had physical health problems; you may be suffering from PTSD.

In the original trauma, the normal and natural fight flight response kicks in, the amygdala immediately decides it is a dangerous situation that must be reacted to in that way; and that is a normal body response to danger.

In the original trauma, the normal and natural fight flight response kicks in, the amygdala immediately decides it is a dangerous situation that must be reacted to in that way; and that is a normal body response to danger. The higher functions of the brain located in the frontal lobe allows us to sort our experience, compare and contrast, make meaning out of what is going on and finding a safe resolution. These higher functions vanish during the original trauma; making it impossible to create any kind of logical strategy for dealing with this emotional disturbance. They go offline because protecting a real threat to the body overrules any other brain task.

Sometimes the amygdala can misinterpret body sensations. Jane can be thinking about the possibility about being rejected by her boyfriend and her abandonment issues get triggered. The amygdala is sensing that her life is being threatened when in essence she is not in danger, but panicking because she has strong, negative feelings and memories of being abandoned by someone she truly loved. This panic is wrongly identified as the possibility of grave physical harm by the amygdala, so its forces rev up.

Around four years ago, I had a number of health issues happen one right after the other: I had the H. Pylori stomach virus that felt like rats were fighting for control over my stomach which led to acid reflux. I remember lying on the floor feeling without energy as the country celebrated the inauguration of the first African-American president. A couple of months later, the electrical system in my heart wore out which resulted in the installation of a heart pacemaker. Then I had surgery to remove a seven millimeter kidney stone that became infected. This followed with intermittent back and other muscle pain.

brainthinkingMy amygdala kicks in when I experience any body sensation that reminds me of the electrical system of my heart giving out or kidney stones floating in painful areas. I could be feeling winded when I exercise or heartburn or any other sensation that seems out of the ordinary. I feel the sensation and then thoughts about my possible demise enter and panic sets in like an unwanted visitor.

I also can be triggered by any incoming body sensation that I feel may lead to my death-even though there are no conscious thoughts that I am going to die, but the amygdala is getting the message that I am in danger and it sounds the alarm that is experienced as intense fear in my body. I feel so overwhelmed when this occurs and don?t know what to do. The panic can last a few minutes or can be intermittent over the course of a day.

This feeling of impending death is experienced at the same time as the memory of suddenly and without any warning, passing out while I was on my five mile run.

I realize that this hyperactive amygdala had its origins when my father died suddenly when I was fifteen years old. My innocence was instantly shattered and I was abruptly pushed into a world of having no father and no means to deal with such a loss.

I have felt shame about this fear/amygdala sensation being activated for most of my life. I always believed the fear was my fault and experienced humiliation since I?ve had no success in warding it off.

Now I know that the amygdala becomes active whenever it senses danger. I have had no control over that process when it does give out its warnings. A huge part of my emotional healing is about learning to accept that the amygdala will do its thing no matter what. Sometimes I will not be able to respond to the trigger immediately and the sirens from that part of my brain will ring with danger and a call to be ever vigilant.

When I was younger, I perceived the amygdala to be the critical parent inside me and now I am aware that I have mislabeled this part. We all have different parts of us inside that may include the child, teenager, calming mother or raging father. The amygdala is not in this category at all. It is part of your brain that is designed to keep you safe by alerting you to danger.

brainExample of how this all works: First you notice a physical sensation like heartburn and as soon as you feel it, you tell yourself that this feeling is not dangerous, that it is only heartburn and not a heart attack or heart failure. You will have to practice this; it won?t be natural to you at first, but after repeating this process several times, it will begin to become second nature. You then tell yourself to take some deep breaths and feel yourself relax. If you are focusing on your breathing, it is difficult to concentrate on anything else like fear.

It is important to realize that hardly any time elapses between the moment you are triggered and the amygdala can be deactivated. The amygdala, at the moment you are triggered is like a pot of water that is only simmering now, but will be boiling over soon if you don?t interrupt its process. Therefore, you don?t have much time to intervene and the trick is to identify what is happening quickly and calm yourself so the amygdala doesn?t sense danger and therefore doesn?t sound its full alarm.

Let?s revisit the case of Jane from earlier. When she was a small child, her father, who she loved very much, one day decided to leave his family without any notice or conveyed reason. Now, whenever she thinks about being abandoned, which she does often, she has the memory of her father leaving and then gets triggered. Shortly after she is triggered, the amygdala kicks in because it senses danger and possible catastrophe. Her past memory falsely interpreted that she is in danger now/in the present.

Jane can then feel out of sorts and very anxious the rest of the day until the amygdala senses that the danger has passed.

She can learn to identify when she feels triggered. She learns that it commences with an anxious feeling followed by her childhood memory of dad leaving. This self-awareness is a cue that the trigger-amygdala activation is about to begin. At this moment she tells herself that she can take care of herself no matter what, that she can tolerate being alone and that she doesn?t need to give this trigger any more energy. She chooses to focus on something else such as work or guitar lessons.

The amygdala will not sense any danger and therefore will not get charged up.

If the amygdala has been activated and you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, hopeless, distressed, and/or confused; healthy distraction is a great technique to use.

If the amygdala has been activated and you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, hopeless, distressed, and/or confused; healthy distraction is a great technique to use. In the midst of these intense negative feelings, you can give yourself permission to distract yourself from the fear by concentrating on something else. You may choose to focus on a work related activity, exercise or a walk on the beach. This diversion from the fear will cause the amygdala to shut down its warning system because it will no longer feel that you are at risk for demise.

One form of healthy distraction for me is to get angry at this sense of overwhelm and by telling myself how sick I am of having to deal with bone aching anxiety. The amygdala may have felt that my anger signified that I was in control and therefore no danger was on the horizon.

It is very important to understand that mastering the process above is far from an easy endeavor. It takes lots of practice and patience. It takes many instances of trial and error. You may find that one or more of these techniques presented here is effective or you may discover something that works for you that no one else has discovered. Sometimes no matter how good you are at these techniques, the amygdala is going to get fired up and you will be overwhelmed. It is possible to reduce the frequency of these incidents though and you need to be a warrior to reach your goals. Go for it!

Psychotherapy Techniques that may help you: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness.

Other techniques that may help: Meditation, Breathing Exercises, Relaxation Skill Training, and other Stress Reduction Programs

Medication prescribed by a psychiatrist may be helpful as well as certain herbs and supplements recommended by alternative healers.

I do recommend that you do your own research for all these helpful possibilities.

Crude oil spills into Mississippi River after oil barges crash

(Reuters) - Two oil barges pushed by a tugboat slammed into a railroad bridge in Vicksburg, Mississippi, on Sunday, causing one to leak crude oil into the Mississippi River, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

Officials used an "absorbent boom" to contain the undetermined amount of oil that leaked into the river after the collision, which occurred shortly after midnight and damaged both barges, Lieutenant Ryan Gomez said. The barge that is leaking was holding 80,000 gallons of light crude oil, he said.

"A towing vessel was pushing two barges side-by-side and they struck one of the Vicksburg railroad bridge piers," Gomez said.

No one was injured in the accident. Federal, state and local officials, as well as the industry's Oil Spill Response Organization, were on the scene.

Gomez said he did not have information about any of the companies involved in the oil transport.

The barges were pushed up against the river bank while a team at the scene decided how to clean up the spill, he said.

American Idol Official leads iOS Apps of the Week

Headling this week's best iOS apps is American Idol Official, a mobile offering that celebrates the televised singing contest, now in its twelfth year. If you?re not into reality TV, we also have solid apps for the X Games, weird facts, grammar, and mathematical calculations.

While it?s hardly my favorite show, it?s hard to dismiss the cultural impact of American Idol. Now Idol has an app to go along with its dominant TV presence. American Idol Official features cast bios, news, and videos of the performances you might have missed on the show. It also features a large social media component, so discussing your favorite singers is a breeze via Facebook and Twitter.

The ESPN X Games app received a mega update recently. For starters, the app shifted its focus to the Winter X Games, so the menus received a chilly winter makeover. Feature-wise, X Games now has a built-in game called HypeMeter as well as ?Gamecast? functionality so users can follow the live results of X Games events. Just sit back and watch Shaun White shred the halfpipe and Roz Groenewoud?curise the slopes.

National Geographic's Weird But True, the app that brings users strange but true facts about everyday life, has updated with a bunch of new content. Its new design features 5 ?Fact Packs? filled with 625 unique ?weird but true? facts. You can also search across Fact Packs to find specific facts they want to share with their friends and family. In addition, you can rate each fact?s level of weirdness and compare with others.

Endless Alphabet helps kids learn their ABC?s alongside some basic grammar with fun, silly lessons and adorable monsters. Kids can learn phonics via interactive puzzles and the app constantly updates with new words. Currently, Endless Alphabet has dozens of words in its database and more are delivered on a regular basis. The app doesn?t score users, as it?s only focused on learning, not competition.

Baby?s on Us

Emily Yoffe: Good afternoon. I look forward to your questions.

Q. IVF Fundraising Party: I have a friend who is 26 and has been married for 23 months. She and her husband started trying to get pregnant right after they bought their house 20 months ago and did get pregnant but had an ectopic pregnancy and she lost the baby eight months ago. Now she has decided to take the step to do IVF because the stress of not getting pregnant is too much for her to stand. My issue is that she does not have the funds to pursue IVF, so she has fundraising parties. She sells home party items and all of the proceeds are going to her treatments. The first one she hosted herself and I went out of obligation. When you checked out and paid she gave you an item total then asked how much extra you would like to put directly toward her baby fund saying the standard was 20 percent of your item total. She then asked each person who would host a party for her fundraising efforts. When I informed her that I would not be hosting a party for her she got very upset and said I was not a good friend because I would not host and I only gave the minimum 20 percent additional to help her have a baby. Am I being selfish or is an IVF fundraising party as outrageous as it seems to me to be?

A: I wonder if at 26 she's explored all her medical alternatives to getting pregnant. But of course here we are speculating on your friend's medical decisions because she's made this profoundly personal question a matter of public obligation. I love her notion that the "standard" IVF tip for an item you didn't want in the first place is 20 percent. The woman's got chutzpah, I'll give her that. What she doesn't have, however, is the standing to insist that all her friends fund her fertility treatments. Wish her the best but continue to demur about hosting the Petri dish party. At the rate she's going, she should soon find herself fuming over all her selfish, former friends.

Dear Prudence: Desperate Single

Q. Not So Much a Cat Lover: I did not grow up with pets, am not a pet person, and am not used to all that comes with being a pet owner. Moving in with my boyfriend and his 6-year-old cat has been a slight adjustment. But I feel that I have been a good sport this past year of living together. I pet and play with the cat, brush her, give her treats, help feed her. I just really dislike the litter box and don't want to have the responsibility of cleaning it out. I ask my boyfriend to take care of this task. However, he gets a little huffy about my refusal to take turns cleaning out the litter box and often brings it up when we are doing household chores. I explain that I really dislike it, and this is his cat that he adopted four years before even meeting me, so it shouldn't be that much to ask that he continue to clean the litter box on his own. But still, I can tell that it bothers him and he feels the cat responsibilities should be split more evenly between the two of us. He does maintain sole financial responsibility for her. Any advice? Am I in the wrong?

A: He may want to offload her loads on you, but sorry, litter-box scooping is the responsibility of the original owner, especially if the new girlfriend is repelled by these duties. You can laugh and say you sure understand why he must be tired of the daily treasure hunt, but while you've come to enjoy Fifi, this is where you're drawing a line in the sand. Then ignore his huffing. And if his cat lives as long as my last one, he only has 15 more years of scooping ahead of him.

Q. Pedophile Co-worker: I am a team leader in a medium-sized arts organization. I recently discovered via Google that someone I work with closely, though only occasionally (several days a month), appears to have been convicted in the past several years for possessing an extensive quantity of truly disturbing child pornography. He pleaded guilty to a lesser charge and was placed on probation. He was hired at a time when the organization needed someone to fill his role (which is a part-time substitute position) very urgently, and I am not sure due diligence was done as it would have been in a more formal hiring process. In any case, his ability to do the job, which he does well, is not related to his criminal past. He has little to no contact with minors at work. However, as the parent of three young children, I am revolted by the idea of working closely with this man, who is pleasant and chatty. Adding to the complexity, while his fairly uncommon name, age, and locale match that of the person in the Google search, I am aware that I have no evidence this is the same man. What do I do? Acting coldly toward him is not only potentially unfair, but jeopardizes my team's ability to do our job well, and will raise questions among other team members. Treating him warmly (if he is the same person) repels me. Do I bring this up with my supervisor? HR? On what grounds? And if they are aware of his (possible) past and chose to hire him anyway, how do I manage my own behavior going forward?

A: I'm left wondering what you mean when you say he has "little to no" contact with minors at work. That indicates there is some contact, and your company needs to know if the terms of his probation, if he is still on it, covers being around minors. I also don't know if your organization's policies would prevent having someone on the payroll who was convicted of a felony. It's also true that you haven't been able to confirm your suspicions. All this is sufficient grounds to go to your supervisor and say you stumbled upon this information, it is not substantiated, but you felt the organization should at the least know what you discovered. If they were aware of his past, or if they look into it and conclude his occasional work should continue (taking into account this issue of minors in the workplace), you put aside your personal feelings and act professionally. It should help if you can accept that he was caught and the criminal justice system rendered its judgment.

Q. Bad Time for a Baby: My husband and I have known each other more than four years, and have been married for almost one year. We are going through a rough patch, and have sought the help of a marriage counselor in addition to his personal therapist for anger management issues. While the frequency of our fights has diminished, I don't think we're yet at a comfortable place in the marriage to think about having any children (I brought my 5-year-old daughter into the marriage, so I'm honestly in no hurry right now). My husband, on the other hand, is desperate for children in the immediate future, and thinks that our relationship issues have no impact, because he grew up in a household where fighting was the norm, and thinks that it wouldn't impact our children at all. How do I get through to him that children won't make anything better, and could in fact make things worse?

A: If your husband, who has back-to-back therapists, has concluded that since his parents were at each other's throats, and so are you two, and all that is hunky dory for childrearing, he needs a lot more therapy or maybe a new set of therapists. I know people can change and grow, but from what you're describing I can't understand why you married him. There's nothing you've written that give me any hope he has the slightest understanding of what it takes to raise a child in a healthy home?which has me concerned about his effect on your little girl. If you have a marriage counselor, yet you feel you have to write to me for advice on saying, "You're too emotionally out of control for me to consider having a child with you," then you need to take a hard look at your situation. It would also be a good idea to double up on the birth control.

Under ObamaCare, It's Quit Smoking or Pay the ... - Big Health Report

2ca0237eea1e8d02270f6a7067005b5aSmokers who thought they were getting a sweet deal from ObamaCare may want to think twice before lighting up again. According to the Associated Press, one of the many well-concealed provisions of the bill that then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Congress had to pass ?so that you can find out what?s in it? could make health insurance cost up to 50 percent more for Americans with cigarette habits ? especially longstanding ones.

The law, known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, was ? as its name implies ? ostensibly designed to make health insurance affordable to Americans. It prohibits insurers from turning down or charging more to individuals with pre-existing conditions and even certain conditions (such as obesity) that increase the risk of health problems.

However, the one condition that the law does not protect from high insurance rates is nicotine addiction ? despite the fact that smoking is associated with a number of serious health problems including heart disease and lung cancer. In fact, it specifically permits insurers to charge higher rates to older smokers than to nonsmokers or even younger smokers. Under the law, older adults in general may be charged up to triple what younger ones are charged (which could end up harming the young by hiking their rates). Smokers may, in addition, be charged up to 50 percent more than nonsmokers for their coverage, but younger smokers may be hit with a lesser penalty than older ones. Plus, the subsidies the government provides to offset the cost of insurance purchased on the individual market cannot be applied to the smoking penalty.

Just how expensive could insurance for older smokers become under ObamaCare? The AP ran the numbers:

Take a hypothetical 60-year-old smoker making $35,000 a year. Estimated premiums for coverage in the new private health insurance markets under Obama?s law would total $10,172. That person would be eligible for a tax credit that brings the cost down to $3,325.

But the smoking penalty could add $5,086 to the cost. And since federal tax credits can?t be used to offset the penalty, the smoker?s total cost for health insurance would be $8,411, or 24 percent of income. That?s considered unaffordable under the federal law. The numbers were estimated using the online Kaiser Health Reform Subsidy Calculator.

?The effect of the smoking (penalty) allowed under the law would be that lower-income smokers could not afford health insurance,? said Richard Curtis, president of the Institute for Health Policy Solutions, a nonpartisan research group that called attention to the issue with a study about the potential impact in California.

These rules apply only to those buying insurance on the individual market. Those obtaining coverage through their employers can escape the penalty ?by joining smoking cessation programs,? says the AP. There is no way to avoid the potential for the penalty altogether, which should not be surprising since the law practically demands that everyone kick the habit or be subjected to ?behavior modification.?

In so decreeing, the federal government took on no small task. About 20 percent of American adults smoke. ?That share,? writes the AP, ?is higher among lower-income people, who also are more likely to work in jobs that don?t come with health insurance and would therefore depend on the new federal health care law.?

Pokemon: The Darker Days Return

Pokemon: The Darker Days Return

Although Pokemon tends to be a nostalgic memory from when we were kids, I'd like to bring a darker edge to it in this roleplay

Pokemon: The Darker Days Return

In the year 2033, Pokemon are now rarely kept as pets, or used in competitive challenges.
In this age, Pokemon are used as weapons. Extremely valuable, powerful weapons.

A team of controversial researchers began experimenting on Pokemon a few years ago. This team called themselves "Omega." They believed that they could harness the power of Electric Pokemon, and use it to generate power. And so they tried to do just that.
This dangerous experimentation caused an outcry from the members of the public. But Omega simply ignored the direct instructions that they should cease this cruelty immediately.
When they realised that they had no way of harnessing this power, or storing it, they gave up on that train of thought, and disappeared for a while. Everyone thought they had gone for good.

Omega emerged some years later, and they had discovered that they could use Pokemon in order to get what they wanted. They began to capture Pokemon from the wild, and torture them until they obeyed orders.
It started off on a small scale, they would use Pokemon to rob corner stores, and mug people on the street.

But things got worse.
It didn't take long for them to start staging bank heist's, and murdering influential political figureheads.

This behaviour caused a war to break out.
People began to train their Pokemon to fight. They formed their own group, calling themselves the "Crusaders".
The Crusaders grew rapidly in size, and eventually waged war against Omega.
The war started in Saffron City, But soon it was brutally occurring all across Kanto.
In this war, the Pokemon do not compete in a friendly battle until one of them "throws in the towel". These battles are to the death.

Currently, The Crusaders train new individuals in a huge camp, situated where Indigo Plateau once sat, in the Johto league.
It is unknown where Omega train their new individuals, But some are beginning to suspect it is around the ruins of Cinnibar.

This war is one of the most disastrous ones humanity has ever faced. A lot of lives have been lost, both human, and Pokemon. The body count is astronomical, the bloodshed unthinkable...

How will it end?

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

In this roleplay, You will begin you story as a new member of even the Crusaders or Team Omega. This is up to you. (There are two special places on each team, of a higher rank.)
You will start with ONE low-level pokemon, chosen from the list below. During your training, you will have the chance to catch more, before you are thrown into the war, to fight your own battles.

(AP) ? Exxon has once again surpassed Apple as the world's most valuable company after the iPhone and iPad maker saw its stock price falter.

Apple Inc.'s stock has been on the decline since the company's quarterly earnings report Wednesday suggested that its fast growth phase, rare for a company of its size, may be coming to an end.

Apple's stock fell 2.4 percent to close Friday at $439.88 for a market capitalization of $413 billion. That followed a 12 percent drop on Thursday, the biggest one-day percentage drop for the company since 2008.

Exxon Mobil Corp. gained 38 cents Friday to $91.73 for a market capitalization of $418 billion.

Apple first surpassed Exxon in the summer of 2011, displacing the oil company from a perch it had held since 2005. The two companies traded places through that fall, until Apple surpassed Exxon for good in early 2012 ? at least until Friday.

China's largest oil company, PetroChina, could lay claim to having hit a market capitalization even higher than either Exxon's or Apple's, but only based on prices on the Shanghai stock exchange, which is isolated from the rest of the financial world because of Chinese laws on foreign investment. PetroChina's shares also trade in Hong Kong and on the New York Stock Exchange. Based on prices there, its market capitalization never went as high as $500 billion.

Apple and Exxon are among only a half dozen U.S. companies to have ever reached $500 billion in market value. Apple and Microsoft Corp. are the only ones to have ever hit $600 billion.

Apple's stock price peaked in September at $705.07 on the day the iPhone 5 was released. Exxon, in the meantime, has been trading steady. Its business ? oil ? seems less prone to stock market ups and downs than the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech darling.

Exxon, which is based in Irving, Texas, set a record in 2008 for the highest quarterly earnings by any company. In the first nine months of 2012, Exxon earned nearly $35 billion, or 10 percent more than the same period in 2011, on revenue of $367 billion. Results for the fourth quarter are due Feb. 1.

Exxon, the biggest investor-owned energy company in the world, predicted in December that oil will continue to be the most important source of energy. That's because cars, trucks, airplanes, trains and ships will still depend heavily on oil-derived fuels such as gasoline and diesel.

This year, investors seem unforgiving with Apple, looking for perfection and punishing the stock for anything less. The company's stock price slipped below $500 for the first time last week, as investors saw signs that the iPhone 5 was falling behind competition from phones running Google's Android software, especially those from Samsung Electronics Co.

The latest quarterly report added to the concerns. Apple warned that its revenue growth, which had been running at a speed more reminiscent of promising startups than multi-national corporations, is slowing down considerably.

A big reason: It has been nearly three years since a new product has come from a company still seen as the embodiment of innovation. That last product, the iPad, came in 2010, when its CEO Steve Jobs was still alive. Some analysts question whether Apple can keep growing by just releasing new versions of its old products. The long-rumored Apple TV, is still just that, a rumor.
