Brazil expresses concern at report of NSA spying

PARATY, Brazil (AP) ? Brazil's foreign minister said Sunday his government is worried by a report that the United States has collected data on billions of telephone and email conversations in his country and promised an effort for international protection of Internet privacy.

The O Globo newspaper reported over the weekend that information released by NSA leaker Edward Snowden shows that the number of telephone and email messages logged by the U.S. National Security Agency in January alone was not far behind the 2.3 billion reportedly collected in the United States.

Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota, speaking from the colonial city of Paraty where he was attending Brazil's top literary festival, expressed "deep concern at the report that electronic and telephone communications of Brazilian citizens are being the object of espionage by organs of American intelligence.

"The Brazilian government has asked for clarifications" through the U.S. Embassy in Brazil and Brazil's embassy in Washington, he said.

Patriota also said Brazil will ask the U.N. for measures "to impede abuses and protect the privacy" of Internet users, laying down rules for governments "to guarantee cybernetic security that protects the rights of citizens and preserves the sovereignty of all countries."

The spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Brazil's capital, Dean Chaves, said diplomats there would not have any comment.

But the Office of the Director of National Intelligence issued a statement saying, "The U.S. government will respond through diplomatic channels to our partners and allies in the Americas ... While we are not going to comment publicly on specific alleged intelligence activities, as a matter of policy we have made clear that the United States gathers foreign intelligence of the type gathered by all nations."

The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff warned Sunday that Snowden's overall disclosures have undermined U.S. relationships with other countries and affected what he calls "the importance of trust." Gen. Martin Dempsey told CNN's "State of the Union" that the U.S. will "work our way back. But it has set us back temporarily."

Patriota's reaction in Brazil extended diplomatic turbulence the U.S. has faced from friends and foes around the world since Snowden began releasing details of the surveillance.

Germany's top security official suggested last month that Internet users could shun operations that use U.S.-based computer servers to avoid security worries. France's Interior Minister used a July 4 garden party at the U.S. Embassy in Paris to complain about alleged U.S. spying, saying "such practices, if proven, do not have their place between allies and partners."

Hong Kong officials last month declined a U.S. request to extradite the former NSA contract worker amid indications of displeasure over his revelation that the former British colony had been a target of American hacking.

The O Globo article said that "Brazil, with extensive digitalized public and private networks operated by large telecommunications and internet companies, appears to stand out on maps of the U.S. agency as a priority target for telephony and data traffic, alongside nations such as China, Russia and Pakistan."

The report did not describe the sort of data collected, but the U.S. programs appear to gather what is called metadata: logs of message times, addresses and other information rather than the content of the messages.

The report was co-authored by U.S. journalist Glenn Greenwald, who originally broke the Snowden story in the Britain-based Guardian newspaper, where he writes a regularly blog.

In a Sunday posting, Greenwald wrote that "the NSA has, for years, systematically tapped into the Brazilian telecommunication network and indiscriminately intercepted, collected and stored the email and telephone records of millions of Brazilians."

He said Brazil was merely an example of a global practice.

"There are many more populations of non-adversarial countries which have been subjected to the same type of mass surveillance net by the NSA: indeed, the list of those which haven't been are shorter than those which have," he wrote.

The O Globo article said the NSA collected the data through an association between U.S. and Brazilian telecommunications companies. It said it could not verify which Brazilian companies were involved or if they were aware their links were being used to collect the data.

Brazil was among several nations asked to provide political asylum by Snowden in recent days. The foreign ministry said last week that it did "not plan to respond" to the leaker's request, though spokesmen declined to say they explicitly denied his application. Other Latin American nations ? Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua ? have already said they will grant asylum.

While some Brazilians were upset by the revelations, others seemed to shrug.

"On the one hand, the size of the U.S. espionage program and the number of Brazilians who fell into it is ridiculous," said Rodolfo Andrade, a 29-year-old businessman in Sao Paulo. "On the other hand, it helps international security."

LOS ANGELES (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co.'s expansion of hybrid and plug-in models and demand for Tesla Motors Inc.'s luxury battery sedans helped electric-drive cars and trucks grow faster in the United States in the first half than even surging pickup trucks.

U.S. sales of hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-only autos rose at least 23 percent to more than 287,000, based on data compiled by Bloomberg. Deliveries of full-size pickups climbed 22 percent.

"The number of entries in the segment continues to grow, so as a buyer you don't have to make a compromise to get what you want," said Alan Baum, principal of Baum & Associates. "Ford is obviously increasing sales, but what's more important is they're now a serious player in this space."

Environmental rules in the United States, Europe and Japan have pushed carmakers to offer more vehicles that don't emit climate-warming gases and consume less fuel.

Pressure on Toyota's Prius, the world's top-selling electric-drive vehicle, is growing as competitors work to replicate the hybrid hatchback's mass-market success.

Ford's hybrid and plug-in versions of the Fusion sedan and C-Max wagon boosted its electric-drive deliveries to 46,197, more than five times its year-earlier volume. Toyota Motor Corp. led with 176,506 such sales, up 4.4 percent.

Pickup profit

Full-sized pickup deliveries exceeded 928,000 in the first half, more than triple sales of electric-drive vehicles.

Such trucks also are the top source of earnings for Ford, General Motors and Chrysler Group. Automakers make an $8,000 to $10,000 profit per pickup they sell, versus $3,000 per mid-size car, John Casesa, senior managing director at Guggenheim Partners LLC, said this week on Bloomberg Radio.

While first-half sales of the four-model Prius line fell 5cpercent to 120,214, Toyota still plans to sell as many as 250,000 this year, Bill Fay, Toyota's group vice president for U.S. sales, said this week.

A revived advertising push, no-interest loans and discount leases are in place to help meet that goal, Fay said.

Tesla, which led North American rechargeable auto sales in the first quarter, topping GM's Volt plug-in and Nissan Motor Co.'s battery-electric Leaf, may have relinquished its volume lead in the first half.

The electric-car maker led by billionaire Elon Musk may have sold 8,931 units of Model S, priced from $69,900, this year through June, according to an estimate by Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey-based Autodata.

Volt, Leaf

Tesla doesn't currently report sales on a monthly basis. The company will provide delivery figures when it releases second-quarter results, said Shanna Hendriks, a Tesla spokeswoman, who declined to confirm Autodata's estimate.

Tesla sold few electric vehicles in last year's first half after concluding Roadster sports car deliveries and starting Model S output.

The Volt, a plug-in hybrid that goes about 38 miles (61 kilometers) on battery power before a gasoline engine engages, had a 12 percent increase to 9,855 units in the first half.

That kept Volt just ahead of Nissan's Tennessee-built Leaf with 9,839 sales, tripling its year-ago sales.

Baum, who analyzes developments in the alternative-powertrain vehicle segment, said he estimates that electric-drive sales may have grown as much as 27 percent in the first half to a record 299,000.

The figures compiled by Bloomberg include data released directly by most automakers, and Autodata estimates for companies including Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors Corp. and Tesla.

People, Parasites, and Plowshares: Learning from Our Body*amp*apos;s Most Terrifying Invaders
Dixon D. Despommier
Columbia University Press, 2013 ($28.95)

Reading this book may make your skin crawl. Despommier, an emeritus professor of public health and microbiology at Columbia University, describes the biological feats of creatures that parasitize humans. The facts are horrifying and fascinating: the worm larvae that cause trichinosis, a disease caused by eating raw or undercooked meat, burrow into muscle tissue and instruct cells to build calcified cysts that serve as the worms' homes. The good news is that researchers can co-opt for our benefit the chemical arsenal that parasites wield. For example, a microscopic worm (right) that lurks in tropical waters can coat itself with human proteins and hide from our immune system. Perhaps scientists could harness this cloaking method to prevent organ rejection in transplant patients. As Despommier argues, these body snatchers deserve respect.

Wildfire cut off Hotshots' access to safety zone

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) ? An erratic wildfire driven by ferocious and shifting winds curled around the location of a team of Arizona Hotshot firefighters, cutting off their access to a safety zone and creating a death trap that quickly consumed them, two fire officials confirmed Friday based on a map of how the tragedy unfolded compiled by The Associated Press.

The map shows that the 19 highly trained Hotshots were just over a quarter of a mile northwest of the safety zone using chain saws, axes and other gear to build a line between the wildfire and the small town of Yarnell on Sunday. But the fire, which was northeast of the team, suddenly changed directions after the winds shifted nearly 180 degrees and cut off their access to the safety zone, a large ranch property.

The AP confirmed the location of the fire crew, their safety zone and the fire's advance based on interviews with people who knew what happened. After building the map, its accuracy was confirmed by Dan Ware, a spokesman for the crews battling the blaze, and Prescott Fire spokesman Wade Ward.

The circumstances of the firefighters' deaths have been known for days but Friday's confirmation offers the most detailed picture about their location and how close to safety they appeared to be.

Officials said the 20th member of the Prescott-based Granite Mountain Hotshots, who served as a lookout for the Hotshot crew and whose exact location during the fire is unclear, was on a hilltop and warned the team that erratic winds had shifted the fire's direction and they were in danger.

The crew had designated a ranch house and its surrounding cleared area as their safety zone, a spot they should be able to reach if things went bad. But the fire moved too fast for them to reach the ranch house, killing the 19 firefighters; the lookout, 21-year-old Brendan McDonough, was able to make it to safety.

A national team of investigators is working to understand more about the firefighters' deaths, visiting the site where they were killed, interviewing McDonough, and examining radio logs and weather conditions. They are expected to release some findings soon, but it will take much longer for a full report.

The lightning-caused wildfire was 80 percent contained Friday, after destroying more than 100 of the roughly 700 homes in Yarnell and burning about 13 square miles.

Fire bosses have begun sending some crews home, and power and gas companies were working to restore service in Yarnell. Residents remained evacuated Friday, but crews were hoping to let them back either this weekend or early next week.

Sens. John McCain and Jeff Flake were planning to meet with Yarnell residents on Friday and speak to members of the media afterward.

A memorial service for the firefighters is set for Tuesday, with Vice President Joe Biden expected to attend.

Autopsies of the firefighters showed they all died of either burns or inhalation issues, or a combination of both. Their bodies, in Phoenix for autopsies, are set to be returned home to Prescott on Sunday in a 75-mile procession.

Associated Press writers Paul Davenport and Amanda Lee Myers in Phoenix, Allen Breed and Felicia Fonseca in Prescott and Martin Di Caro in Washington contributed to this report.

Qwiki (for iPhone)

Vine clones seem to be cropping up everywhere, but in truth, Vine was far from the first video-Instagram wannabe?just the most successful. Even Instagram added video sharing this past June to get in on some of Vine's market. Now it's Yahoo's turn, with the acquisition of Qwiki. Qwiki resembles Vine and other video sharing apps, but with a difference: You use videos you already shot, stored in your iPhone's Camera Roll rather than shooting a spontaneous clip within the app. And it's not just about videos, in fact, Qwiki is actually more about photos, combining video and stills into a crafted slideshow.

Getting Started with Qwiki
You'll need iOS 5.1 or later to install the app on your iPhone or iPod touch. You can install it on an iPad, but it's optimized for iPhone. Thankfully, you can sign up for a Qwiki account by tapping a Facebook button and granting permission to access your profile?you don't need a Yahoo account. You can, however, sign up with any old email address if you prefer. Either way, you'll need to enter a new password just for Qwiki. Next you choose whether you want the app to be able to pop up push notifications. So many apps these days have latched onto this way to remind you of their existence; if you can handle yet another, tap OK.

Now you're in the Qwiki app interface proper, where you'll see a feed of video thumbnails of popular submissions. I like how these simply show icons for favorites and comments, rather than actually displaying some or all comments, as some other social video apps do; that design can clutter the feed. During my first foray into the app, helpful/distracting tooltips encouraged me to "Find Friends" and to "See what Qwiki makes for you."

Tapping the first offered Facebook and local contacts, as well as a list of popular Qwikiers. Adding contacts many at a time is a snap with either option. We'll get to that second Create button below in the Making Your Own Qwiki section.

Interface
A dropdown from the main Qwiki logo at top center lets you switch your feed from Popular to just members you're following or to videos tagged with suggested hashtags. A nicely designed search feature lets you switch between hashtags and users. At top right is a heart/comment button, which shows activity in your network of Qwiki contacts and lists who you're following.

When you hit a video's Play arrow, obviously it starts playing, and the comments and Likes expand below the narrow video window. Turning your iPhone sideways switches playback to full-screen mode?another nice design touch. Pause and AirPlay buttons appear if you tap the screen, in case you want to watch the video on your big-screen through Apple TV. After the video finishes, you'll see large heart (like), replay, and follow buttons over the last frame. Since the videos can be much longer than Vine videos?up to a whole minute!?I'd appreciate the addition of a scrubber, to fast forward through them.

Making Your Own Qwiki
After tapping the +Create bar at the bottom of the main Qwiki screen, you have two basic choices?Auto (We create, you edit) and Custom (You create and edit). With either option, you need to grant the app access to your Camera roll before you can get going. With the first option, the app groups images by date, creating previews for each date it finds enough photos for.

With the second option, you select up to 25 photos and/or videos, and then let the app/service work its magic. I chose 24 photos and one video from my recent trip to Split, Croatia. After hitting done and waiting just a few seconds for Loading, I could apply an effect filter, edit media and captions, and choose background music. Note that Qwiki doesn't let you include the sound from your original video, and it drastically shortened my test video.

You can add a caption for each "moment," which can consist of more than one image. I could select any song from my phone's library, or choose from nine canned "Soundtracks." Adding the Cross Process effect wasn't instantaneous, but only took about 30 seconds. I could also choose Fast or Slow playback speeds. The Auto option created a very pleasing end result, with pan and zoom and split screen views for similar photos.

Sharing Out
Once you're happy with the resulting montage, you tap the big green Share button, which opens the Publish page. Here you can change the titles, location, and tag friends. At this point you also have a number of sharing options, including not only your Qwiki stream, but also SMS, Facebook, Twitter, and you can even embed a Qwiki on any web page. You can also choose to make the Qwiki private (you can still share it later). After I hit Publish, the video was quickly rendered and ready to play.?

When you send someone a link to a Qwiki video, they'll see it presented on a web page, but it can only be viewed as an inset window?not full screen?and you don't get any of the social features (liking, commenting) on the web presence. That's similar to what you get with Vine, but other apps like Viddy offer richer web interfaces. At least Qwiki lets you share to Facebook, Twitter, or use embed code for the web video. I encountered a minor bug when composing a sharing email in the app: if I tried typing the addressee's name too soon, the email would close, but there were no real show-stoppers like those you often see in video apps.

Time for a Qwiki?
Qwiki is not going to replace Vine or Instagram, but it does offer a way to present your iPhone photos and video clips in a really attractive way and share them either privately or with a wider audience. While it does mean joining yet another social network, Qwiki's design for this is pretty frictionless, and the app also lets you share to the more popular social properties like Facebook and Twitter. I still like Viddy better among social video apps, but Qwiki fills a different niche, and does so admirably enough.

Nokia's Here Maps service comes to the Asha 501, beta release available now for download

DNP Nokia's Here Maps comes to the Asha 501, beta release available now for download

The touchscreen Asha 501 Nokia unveiled back in May will now work with Here Maps, the company announced on its blog today. The navigation service is already available on Windows Phone 8, Firefox OS, Android and iOS, and its arrival on the Asha platform will boost that operating system's more modest selection of apps. Available now as a beta release, Here Maps for the Asha 501 offers turn-by-turn navigation and real-time traffic information. It's designed specifically for low-end smartphones without GPS on board, and Nokia's post notes that the current version "is a starting point and we will improve the experience over time." iOS 7 vs. Instagram vs. Google+ vs. Twitter: Black & White photo filter comparison

iOS 7 vs. Instagram vs. Google+ vs. Twitter: Black & White photo filter comparison

I recently previewed the new Camera app Apple will be releasing alongside iOS 7 this fall, and one of the things that stood out for me the most was not so much the inclusion of built-in photo filters - everyone seems to be adding those these days - but the subtly and restraint shown in which filters Apple chose to include. Not only aren't there any tilt-shifts, frames, borders, or vignettes, but there's nothing overly aggressive about Apple's selection in any way. How does that compare to current king of photo sharing, Instagram, and to the other big social photo sharing services, Google+ and Twitter?

There's such a range it makes things tricky, so to begin with, I'm going to stick to black and white filters using what Apple's shown off so far on Apple.com, and the photo they've shown it off with. I'm not going to look at color filters yet, or at pro-level apps like VSCOCAM or Camera+. I am going to include Camera Noir both because it focuses on just the black and white filter, and because that filter is a lot like the late, lamented Gotham filter of Instagram past.

To create the comparison, I took the screenshots posted on Apple.com, isolated the unfiltered image, loaded it into the other apps, applied their filters, and then took screenshots of the resulting images.

Here's what the black and white filters looks like from, in order, iOS 7 Camera, Instagram, Google+, Twitter, and Camera Noir.

And here's the same comparison with the interface chrome removed, again, iOS 7 Camera, Instagram, Google+, Twitter, and Camera Noir:

Since iOS 7 is still in beta, Apple could still change the way the Camera filters work and look before final release this fall. Never-the-less, it's interesting to see the direction they've taken, and perhaps even more so to see the various approaches to black and white filters already implemented in the apps we currently use every day.

Which set of photo filters is your go-to now, and how do you like what Apple's shown of iOS 7 filters so far?

Razer Blade 2013: Now This Is How You Make a Damn Windows Laptop

Razer Blade 2013: Now This Is How You Make a Damn Windows Laptop

Everyone?s first impression of the 14-inch Razer Blade, even more than its 17-inch older brother, is Ha, they made a MacBook. But then, Oh?wait. They made a MacBook. And actually, it's even better than that.

What Is It

A 14-inch gaming laptop that's small and light enough to be your everyday machine.

Why Does It Matter

For years now, laptops have been getting smaller, thinner, and overall just better. But only a certain, extreme kind of thin has gotten any design consideration to speak of. Anyone who wanted more power from their laptop was basically stuck with a clunky box if they wanted something that could play games (or crunch numbers) well and run Windows.

The 17-inch Blades from last year were wholly impressive from the standpoint of bringing the contents (more or less) of a massive gaming laptop into something much smaller than we had ever really considered. But 17 inches is still too big for most of our bags, and for most of us in general, really. Fourteen inches, though, is an almost perfect size for anyone who doesn?t need the tiniest of laptops. If the 17-inch Blade was a Humvee, the 14-inch is a tricked out Mustang.

Razer Blade 2013: Now This Is How You Make a Damn Windows Laptop

But the real reason that this machine and others like it are important is what it means for the next few generations of laptops. We're not done yet. Integrated graphics are improving rapidly?Haswell is really impressive in a lot of ways?but only in the context of the way we game and use computers now. For the next level stuff, things like the Oculus Rift, or stuff we haven?t even thought of yet, we need more power. We?ll have to draw the same graphics twice, for each eye, or appease some other crazy contortion. The Ock lags on even solid hardware, like last year?s 17-inch Blade (now Pro) refresh. We want smaller, more beautiful laptops. But we?ll also need raw power. And this is the best shot at combining the two.

Design

All black; so beautiful. The Blade is anodized black aluminum that?s gorgeous to look at, although it attracts fingerprints and other smudges like a black hole. It?s as slim as a MacBook Pro Retina 13, and has similar hard lines, as opposed to the old 17-inch?s more rounded form. It?s also ditched the Switchblade hotkeys and instead has a single trackpad in the center of the body. Instead of being a single piece of glass, like most premium laptops, it?s got two buttons at the bottom of the trackpad. There are two speaker grills along the sides of the keyboard. The keys are backlit in green and actually look pretty awesome whether lit or unlit; the lid has Razer?s garish logo illuminated in green as well.

Using It

When you first sit down with the Blade, you don?t really want to change a thing. It feels impossibly thin for something you expect to squeeze good game graphics out of, and as solid as anything that?s ever come out of Apple. The most impressive part, maybe, is all the little things it gets right that old school laptop makers consistently get so wrong. The hinge on the lid is perfect?no wobble, but not too stiff to move. The body itself is clean, clear of any excess ornamentation (beyond that hideous logo). The speakers are a bit of an eyesore, but Razer?s been over-conscious about sound since a few reviewers killed them about the first Blade?s anemic speakers. (The left speaker on our model did have one edge that wasn?t flush with the chassis, which was a bit distracting and the only manufacturing imperfection we saw). Even the keyboard and trackpad are wonderful. The keyboard is properly spaced for typing, with good travel distance to type full speed on, but also with enough distance to WASD with precision.

The biggest issue with using it day to day is the idiotic buttons at the bottom of the trackpad. They?re flimsy, too small, and given how well the rest of the trackpad responds, totally unnecessary. Yes, they?re included to save on cost (mechanical parts) and space in the body. But that?s not a good compromise to make; get the trackpad right, it?s one of three things on a laptop that really affects your senses (along with screen and keyboard). Of course, while gaming, the downside minimized. But for a ?gaming? laptop with so much potential to just be the single best Windows laptop (and it probably still is for the weight class above ultrabooks), it?s borderline unacceptable.

Razer Blade 2013: Now This Is How You Make a Damn Windows Laptop

Gaming is what you?d expect given the hardware. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M is a fairly decent card, and you?ll be able to run most modern games on High settings and get extremely playable framerates. BioShock Infinite was well over 60 FPS at High. Skyrim was in the high 40s; Dishonored in the 50s (with a few dips); and congested areas of WoW 25-35. All of which is to say, this is an extremely capable setup, though certainly not top end.

Battery life isn't what you?ve been seeing from other Haswell computers. It?s not the 12+ hour MacBook Air, or even the 8-10-hour Vaio. But it?s not all that bad. We got 2 hours and 45 minutes of battery with mixed usage (1 hour Skyrim, 1 hour assorted web browsing, 45 minutes BioShock infinite; 60 percent brightness, backlit keys off), and over 2 hours of Team Fortress 2 at the same settings. The original Blade ran TF2 for 49 minutes before crapping out. So this is progress.

Back in late 2011, after it had announced the first Blade, Razer told us that the reason it went with 17 inches was that that?s the smallest possible screen that you can use and still easily immerse a viewer into the environment. Any smaller and you?re not getting a full experience. The 14-inch version more or less confirms this. It?s perfectly okay for games, but you?re going to want to hook it up to a larger monitor if you?re at a desk?for the extra real estate/immersion, but also for the hunched-over factor of gaming on a 14-inch laptop.

The screen itself is one of the few weak points here. It looks fine?in games more than when browsing the web or using other apps?but the 1600 x 900 resolution just doesn?t feel in line with the rest of the machine. 1080p would have been ideal, especially with Windows 8.1 handling the higher density displays a little better now, but richer colors with more contrast would have been an improvement too. The matte finish is nice, but with the rest of the laptop collecting every fingerprint it comes in contact with, the message feels a little skewed. The Blade draws to 1080p displays just fine, so it?s not like the Razer Edge, which was forced into its 1366x768 display because of horsepower.

Razer Blade 2013: Now This Is How You Make a Damn Windows Laptop

Like

This is very close to a perfect body for a gaming laptop. The Blade is gorgeous and well built. There is zero flex anywhere. It runs current games on high graphics settings at good-to-acceptable framerates. The trackpad is more responsive than the majority of Windows laptops', and the keyboard is just about perfect. While the body gets hot during gaming, the fans do a good job of not letting it affect performance without sounding like a wind tunnel.

No Like

The mostly awesome trackpad is almost completely submarined by its idiotic buttons. Battery life is hugely improved from your standard gaming rig, but you're getting nowhere near the six hours claimed by Razer. The screen is sub-optimal, on color performance and viewing angles (a problem for a matte display), and at 1600x900, feels like by far the weakest link and the piece that will age the poorest.

Test Notes

  • As you?d expect, it gets HOT. But within reason. The Blade actually does a really nice job of controlling its temperature (without a ton of fan noise) when you?re not gaming; doing everyday tasks, it was rarely above room temperature. Once you start gaming, however, the heat cranks up. It gets hot enough to physically burn you if you do something dumb like rest it on your chest, and the dual exhaust fans on the bottom line up almost exactly with where you?d rest it on your thighs/knees (sigh). Still, the heat stays closer to the bezel of the screen for the most part, and the palm rests and keyboard area were never worse than warm. Extended sessions also didn?t cause any slowdown to framerates in-game, which is nice for anyone who?s ever had to prop up their laptop and point a fan at it to keep a game running for more than 30 minutes.

Razer Blade 2013: Now This Is How You Make a Damn Windows Laptop

  • Razer does a pretty good job of shipping without any bloatware. You have some Razer component stuff, but you?ll want those for keeping drivers up to date anyway. Otherwise, it?s just a few Intel and Nvidia shortcuts.
  • You will miss the screen not having touch if you've gotten used to using a Windows 8 device that has it. It's another cost- and space-saving move, but you'll feel this more in the years coming up, too.
  • As you?d guess, the drivers aren?t perfect with Windows 8.1 yet. For the final day or two testing, I stuck 8.1 on the Blade and the 14-inch screen is very improved by the new Snap.
  • I can?t stress enough how many fingerprints this thing collects. Wiping it down with a microfiber is enough to get rid of them, but it can be distracting.
  • The speakers are loud and clear, but also quite tinny. The bass is almost non-existent. But you?ll be able to make out voices and sound cues in games, and it?s more or less acceptable for movies and TV.
  • At startup, the Blade would occasionally make a noise like a circada was being spun through a bicycle tire?s spokes, which was likely coming from the fan, but really I have no idea.

Razer Blade 2013: Now This Is How You Make a Damn Windows Laptop

Should You Buy This?

Yes. The standard line for Razer hardware has usually been, ?Hahaha, NO. Unless you lactate liquid gold.? Here, though, the price is still steep, but not insanely steeper than its peers. Toshiba?s KiraBook starts at $1700; the Blade at $1800, and the comparison isn?t even close. A 15-inch MacBook Pro non-retina with an inferior graphics card and less RAM costs the same $1800.

The Blade isn?t perfect?it?s really hard to forget how awful those trackpad buttons are, and that screen is going to be regrettable in a year or to, if it isn't already?but it?s a freaking awesome computer that is somehow also a decent value. Get it if you?re looking at getting a nice laptop to game on that you can use for just about anything else, too, without breaking your back or your bank account.

Ricki Lake's House On The Market For $8.75 Million (PHOTOS)

Small-screen stars seem to have an affinity for one particular home in the ritzy Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, Calif.

Right now, the home belongs to long-time talk show host Ricki Lake, who just listed the property for a whopping $8.75 million. But back in 2002, Lake bought the estate from "Friends" star Courtney Cox and her then-husband David Arquette for $5.6 million, according to real estate blog Redfin.

One look at the listing photos reveals why celebs like Lake and Cox have made this house a home. Built in 1949, the gated "plantation"-style property has six bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms and sits on almost one acre of land, notes the official listing. Outdoors, the grounds feature a pool, spa and several patio areas. Carrying on the indoor-outdoor theme, the home's interiors boast large skylights, soaring wood beam ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows and glass doors.

Lake's most recent foray into daytime television, "The Ricki Lake Show," was canceled in February after just one season on the air, but she still managed to snag a Daytime Emmy award for "Outstanding Talk Show Host."

She is married to jewelry designer Christian Evans; the pair eloped April 2012 in an intimate California beach ceremony, and the only guests were their two dogs.

The former TV host already has two sons with former husband Rob Sussman. She told Celebuzz soon after her elopement that she was not going to have any more children. Perhaps that's the reason she's letting go of this grand, gorgeous home.

(AP Photo/POOL)

(AP) ? F.W. de Klerk, the last leader of South Africa's apartheid era and a co-recipient of the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with Nelson Mandela, has suffered dizziness and will be fitted with a pacemaker to help his heart function, a foundation said Tuesday.

A Cape Town-based foundation named after 77-year-old de Klerk said the former president felt dizzy after returning home on Sunday from a trip to Europe, and consulted his specialist on Monday.

"He has had several such spells in recent weeks and his specialist recommended the immediate installation of a pacemaker. He will be fitted with a pacemaker later today and will spend the night in hospital," the foundation said in a statement.

On Saturday, the foundation issued a statement on behalf of de Klerk and his wife Elita, saying they had decided to suspend a working visit and vacation in Europe because Mandela is critically ill, and that they were praying for an improvement in the health of the anti-apartheid leader.

Mandela, 94, was taken to a Pretoria hospital on June 8 to be treated for what the government said at the time was a recurring lung infection. Since then, there has been a groundswell of concern in South Africa and around the world for the man who spent 27 years as a prisoner under apartheid and then emerged to negotiate an end to white racist rule before becoming president in the country's first all-race elections in 1994.

De Klerk, a former education minister who had backed segregated schooling, was a key figure in a delicate transition that turned out to be relatively peaceful despite fears of widespread racial conflict. In 1990, a year after becoming South Africa's president, he announced he was legalizing the African National Congress, the banned group that led the anti-apartheid movement, and would free Mandela. He received the Nobel prize along with Mandela for his reformist initiatives and effectively negotiating himself out of power.

De Klerk later served as a deputy president during Mandela's single five-year term as president. Since his retirement from political life, he has traveled widely and delivered lectures. His foundation says its mission is to help poor and disabled children, contribute to conflict resolution and uphold South Africa's constitution, which robustly supports the protection of human rights.

Last year, Mandela's archivists and Google announced a project to digitally preserve a record of Mandela's life. In one online video, de Klerk recalled being asked to address parliament alongside Mandela in 2004. It was the 10th anniversary of the day Mandela became president. Mandela took de Klerk's arm as lawmakers applauded.

"It is, if you now look back, a symbol of how reconciliation can manifest itself," de Klerk said, reflecting on his encounter with Mandela.

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Active (AT&T)

The slightly confusingly named Samsung Galaxy S 4 Active ($199.99-594.99) isn't quite a Galaxy S 4 in a waterproof case. It's a different phone, albeit with the S 4's processor and Android skin. Some of the changes are for the better (a super-loud speakerphone), others are for the worse (a less-capable camera), and yet others are a matter of taste (a different screen technology). Since camera quality is critically important nowadays, I'll say that factor slightly outweighs the others, but I wouldn't be amazed if you judged differently. This is still an excellent Android smartphone.

Physical Features
The Galaxy S 4 Active is a bit thicker than the standard S 4 at 5.5 by 2.8 by .36 inches (HWD). Irritatingly, that seems to make some standard S 4 cases not work because the hole for the headphone jack is in ever so slightly the wrong place; you can fix that by cutting a bigger hole in your case.

I strongly prefer the Active's three physical Menu, Home and Back buttons to the S 4's single Home button and capacitive Menu and Back buttons. Above those buttons, there's a 1080p TFT LCD screen rather than the original S 4's Super AMOLED HD. It appears marginally brighter, but with slightly less saturated colors. The LCD also doesn't use the PenTile pixel arrangement, which bothers some people but which I insist is invisible at a pixel density this high (441ppi.)

The Active comes in gray and turquoise. Our model had a blue back and sides with textured gray plastic panels at the top and bottom of the back. The back appears to have a texture, but that's just an illusion; it's the usual slick Samsung plastic, and it peels right off to reveal the microSD card slot and removable battery.?

The Galaxy S 4 Active is water-resistant and "dust resistant," but not rugged. Although those gray plastic panels are somewhat tougher than the original S 4's back, the screen isn't protected, and it's just as likely to scratch as on the standard S 4. That said, the water resistance is real here. I submerged the Active for half an hour in about eighteen inches of water, and later did camera testing for half an hour in a warm bathtub. The Active didn't leak, but the touch screen became useless under water and for up to a minute after removing it from the water. Because almost all of the Active's features depend on the touch screen, that made the phone pretty useless.

The one exception was the camera. By kicking the camera into "Aqua" mode before you put it in the water, you turn the volume rocker into a shutter button, triggering either photos or videos. That and the power button are the only controls you get underwater.

Voice Calls, Battery and Networking
The S 4 Active is a good voice phone, but not quite as good as the original S 4. I found inconsistent voice quality using the earpiece in a few tests. Sometimes the Audience-powered noise cancellation worked well, sometimes it didn't. Earpiece volume was loud enough for most environments, although the phone vibrated a bit at top volume, something I didn't notice on the regular S 4. The phone has a stunningly loud speakerphone which vibrates the device body noticeably. The speakerphone also has excellent noise cancellation and a nice, warm tone through its microphone. It was easy to activate voice dialing with a Plantronics Voyager Legend Bluetooth headset, but Samsung's S Voice had trouble recognizing some names for dialing.

The Active's 2600mAh battery is the same as the Galaxy S 4's, so you should get the same talk time. I can't explain why I got such spectacular battery results here, with 16 hours, 41 minutes of talk time and 5 hours, 41 minutes of video streaming compared to the ordinary S 4's 10 hours, 50 minutes of talk time and 4 hours, 48 minutes of streaming. You should expect similar battery life here to the HTC One on AT&T.

Speeds on AT&T's 4G LTE network were also blazing. AT&T's network is the fastest in the USA, and we got awe-inspiring speeds of 14-18Mbps down and 6-8Mbps up in Manhattan. The phone will work on AT&T's network here in the US; it will also roam to foreign HSPA+ networks. Other connectivity includes 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi on the 2.4 and 5GHz bands, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and a GPS chip that locks in very quickly and accurately.

Software and Performance
Here's where the S 4 Active is most similar to its sedentary cousin. Just like the ordinary S 4, the Active runs Android 4.2 with Samsung's additions on a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, making it the fastest phone on the market right now. Benchmark scores were similar to the S 4, except for a little hiccup where it was imperceptibly slower to toggle Bluetooth on and off.

I wrote about Samsung's extensive "S Everything" skin in my original Galaxy S 4 review, so you can take a look by jumping to that page here.?My Galaxy S 4 Tips and Tricks?story shows what happens when you go a level deeper.

In summary, there's a massive jumble of ideas here: great ones like customizable call audio, split-screen multitasking and a built-in pedometer; so-so ones like a slightly sluggish IR remote control; and unreliable ones like Smart Scroll, which is supposed to let you scroll pages by tilting your head.

As I said in the original review: It's like Microsoft Office, in that it's packed with features. But you know what? People love Microsoft Office, because everybody finds what they need in it, and they don't all find or need the same things. The Samsung Galaxy S 4 has a million ideas and needs to share all of them, right now, and it doesn't matter if five of them are ridiculous because you're going to think the next five are brilliant.

AP source: Knicks, Raptors agree to Bargnani deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? A person with knowledge of the details says the New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors have agreed on their deal involving former No. 1 overall pick Andrea Bargnani.

The Knicks will get the forward from Italy in exchange for three players and three picks, the person tells The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because the talks were to remain private.

Toronto will receive Knicks reserves Steve Novak, Marcus Camby and Quentin Richardson, who will be signed-and-traded. The Knicks are also sending the Raptors a 2016 first-round pick and two second-round picks.

The deal can't become official until July 10, after next season's salary cap has been set.

Bargnani, the No. 1 pick of the 2006 draft, has two years and about $22.2 million remaining on his contract.
