Griffin Uhl has the size and strength of a college-level defensive lineman, but faced an uphill battle with recruiters since he never played high school football.
Courtesy of the Uhl Family
By the time that Linda Uhl took her son Griffin to football recruiting camps the summer before his senior year, she knew he possessed the talent to play in college. He had all the makings of a Division-I defensive lineman: size (6-1, 265 pounds), strength and speed.
Uhl was just missing one crucial thing: a high school football team.
Growing up in Memphis, Ind. (pop. 695), Uhl never played high school football. His tiny school of Henryville High (enrollment: 490) didn't have a program, and he gained most of his experience playing in a nearby community league, one that his parents helped run. Linda filmed the games, and Uhl's father, Jeff, called players who didn't show up. Griffin was forced to do things that most high schools players typically have done for them, from researching his own training methods to cooking his own meals.
Uhl dreamed of playing on Saturdays. But the odds were stacked staggeringly against him. According to the NCAA, of the 316,697 seniors that played high school football last year, just 6.1 percent will play at the next level.
"I got a lot of naysayers," Uhl said. "That just made me want to play more."
*****
College scouts weren't coming to Uhl's community league games, so he had to seek them out. The summer after his sophomore year, Uhl and his mother traveled to a scouting camp at Ball State.
When Uhl arrived, he didn't blend in with the other kids. He wasn't with a team -- he was all by himself. And then there was the issue of his equipment. He didn't have a Riddell Revolution helmet like other prospects; the other kids described his helmet as an antique.
Uhl soon realized that he was at a disadvantage. To compete, he would have to vastly overcompensate.
Of course, Uhl was well aware of that fact going in. In addition to lacking a program, Henryville's weight room was less than ideal ("The school weight room is basically a closet," he said), so Uhl had to learn to lift on his own. He frequented the local YMCA and drove more than a half an hour down Interstate 65 to train, gradually teaching himself to add weight, condition and follow a college-level regimen.
His dedication paid off. One spring day, Uhl participated in a light workout by himself. He squatted 585 pounds before a single drop of sweat rolled down the side of his face.
"I had to go and research and read stuff and learn about all that myself," Uhl said. "I think that's why I've gotten so much stronger than everybody else, because I had to learn how to do it myself."
That commitment bred success at Ball State's camp. Despite his old-fashioned helmet, Uhl emerged as a budding talent. He proved that he belonged.
"I get there and they're doing one-on-ones and I do really well," Uhl said, referring to blocking drills between offensive and defensive linemen. "At the end, they put me in a showcase rep, so it's like, all right, I can play against these guys that go to these big schools."
Linda still gets emotional when she thinks about that day. She called it the catalyst for a long, exhausting journey that would follow.
"We got in the car and he turned to me," Linda said, fighting back tears. "He said, 'Mom, now I know I can play with the kids that have had high school programs,' and that was kind of the moment where he knew -- he knew right then that he could do it."
*****
Uhl's training gave him strength, and the Ball State camp gave him confidence. But he still needed college coaches to notice him. The summer after his junior year, it began to happen.
He attended football camps at Louisville and the local-level National Underclassmen Combine. He was named defensive line MVP at the latter, and was invited to the Midwest Ultimate 100 Combine in Indianapolis. There, he went undefeated in one-on-one drills and was again labeled defensive line MVP. He was then invited to the Elite Top Prospect Camp in Norman, Okla.
Shortly after arriving, Linda and Griffin were approached by Dave Schuman, who founded National Underclassmen in 2005. He offered for Uhl to live with him in New Jersey and play his senior year on the high school team that he coached.
"He said, 'If he plays on my team he will get the exposure he needs and he'll have more D-I offers than he'll know what to do with'," Linda said.
Schuman was confident in Uhl's ability because of the things he heard from National Underclassmen coaches like Quincy Hipps. A former defensive end at Miami, Hipps noticed Uhl because of his high motor and accelerated learning curve.
Lacking ideal facilities, Griffin Uhl taught himself to lift weights and train.
Courtesy of the Uhl Family
"You know when you find something, a great player, because they could do things fast, they could do it the first time you show it to them," Hipps said. "He could pick it up as fast as you could put it down."
After drills, Hipps asked Uhl where he played in high school. He was shocked to find out the answer: he didn't.
"I had never in my life heard of that," Hipps said.
Despite the praise, Linda turned Schuman's offer down. It was too drastic of a move -- and too much for a mother to give up.
"I couldn't do that," Linda said. "I understood what the purpose was, but at the same time, we would be in a situation where -- if something would have really happened to him -- that wouldn't have been my decision anymore as to what was done to care for him. That was not something we were willing to do."
Schuman understood. But he made sure the Uhl family internalized one unmistakable fact. Although Griffin was in the top one percent of players that Schuman scouted, he only saw Uhl in shorts and a T-shirt, not pads and a uniform. While there was no denying his potential, there was no way of confirming it, either.
"Top one percent in shorts and T-shirts usually translates into being top one percent on the field," Schuman said. "But not always. That's the issue."
*****
Uhl played community league football again during his senior year, and Linda filmed every game. She pieced together the footage with film from camps and combines, and promptly sent it out to anyone who would accept it.
Without exception, every recipient said that Uhl was skilled enough to play at the next level. Linda recalled: "We kept hearing from everyone, 'He's Division-I material . . . No problem, just be patient, it's all going to happen. Send it out.'"
So she did. And the results were striking. According to Uhl, he was contacted by Wyoming, Indiana State, Illinois State, Western Kentucky, Murray State, Central Connecticut and Louisville. Unfortunately, since Uhl lacked any game experience, none were willing to offer him a scholarship.
National Signing Day came and went, and more than a month later, Uhl still didn't know where -- or if -- he was going play college football in the fall.
In fact, most of the schools that once expressed interest stopped contacting him altogether. Except Louisville.
Hipps played with Louisville's defensive line coach, Clint Hurtt, during his career at Miami. Hipps told his former teammate about Uhl, but Hurtt already had his eyes on the under-the-radar prospect. Hurtt recognized Uhl's potential during a Louisville camp the previous summer and continued to stay in touch with him.
Louisville couldn't offer him an athletic scholarship -- he didn't play high school football, after all -- but Hurtt was confident that if Uhl walked on, he would be able to earn one.
As the Uhls sat around the dinner table one night, Linda admitted she was warming to the idea. "If he walked on, it would be fitting because he didn't do anything else the conventional way," she said.
A week later, Griffin trekked to Louisville's campus to watch the Cardinals' spring practice. He obtained answers to his questions and went home to discuss his experience with his family. Two days later, he decided to join the Cardinals as a preferred walk-on.
Uhl didn't get there in any ordinary fashion. He didn't make local headlines, and he didn't make a ballyhooed Signing Day announcement. He didn't even have modern equipment. That basically says it all.
But somehow, someway, Uhl will play college football in 2012. Given the odds, that's a remarkable feat in itself.
At the local-level combine in Lexington, Ky., Linda remembers seeing a group of parents huddled around Je'Mone Smith, a former professional football player for the Philadelphia Eagles. She asked Smith for advice, for how to approach Uhl's unique high school situation.
Smith simply laughed. "Good luck," he said.
Now, after years of sweat and frustration, the Uhls are the ones laughing. Griffin is no longer telling people that he wants to play college football. He's telling them that he will.

In the past decade gentrification has rolled inexorably east, powered by the freak money being made and spent in this world financial capital, first into Spitalfields, then Hoxton, Shoreditch, and Bethnal Green, in the borough of Hackney, and finally to Whitechapel and Mile End, in Tower Hamlets. (In 2012, it will roll even farther east when the Olympics are held in Stratford.) These are the neighborhoods and boroughs that make up East London, a palimpsest whose rough-and-tumble history indelibly colors its contemporary identity. ?Maria Shollenbarger
Aesop: Upon entering this simple shop, designed in green hues with reclaimed wood, patrons are awed by row after row of dark glass apothecary jars filled with cutting-edge beauty potions. The third London branch of the now-global Australian brand, this Shoreditch shop provides a welcomed option to Aesop addicts and newbies alike. The products, made with extensively researched botanical ingredients, are at once effective and enjoyable, with favorites including the aromatic geranium leaf body scrub, moisturizing Moroccan Neroli shave lotion, sage shampoo, and mandarin facial cream.
Bistrotheque: Patrons willing to search for this unmarked eatery, tucked away in a converted East London factory, will likely find it's well worth the extra effort. Part restaurant, part bar, and part cabaret theater, Bistrotheque offers a trendy, industrial-chic atmosphere with exposed pipes, gleaming cement floors, and sleek marble-top tables softened by vibrant bouquets and plenty of sunlight. The bistro is particularly popular for brunches consisting of eggs Benedict and traditional Sunday roast, although the dinner menu is equally enticing, pairing fresh fruit cocktails with delicate steak tartare and garlicky roast chicken followed by decadent cr?me br?l?e.
Broadway Market: Situated between the Regent?s Canal and London Fields, this Hackney market sells everything from fresh organic produce to vintage clothing. With a history dating back to the 1890?s, the marketplace was revived in 2004 and quickly became one of the most celebrated markets in the city. More than 100 stalls line the streets every Saturday, offering high-quality meats, cheeses, fair-trade coffee, fudge, homemade jams, truffle oils, smoked garlic, and mushroom risotto. In addition to food, vendors also sell handmade soaps, vintage records, flowers, and antique jewelry. Street musicians often play lively jazz music during the event, as well.
Caf? Columbia: Every Sunday morning, historic Columbia Road becomes a colorful, fragrant collage of flower stalls, and in the midst of all the lovely blooms, an equally ambrosial treat awaits: the fresh, blissful bagels of Caf? Columbia. Only open during flower market hours, this charming family-owned caf? has been delighting market-goers with delicious fare for over three decades. Behind the quaint green storefront, customers discover just-baked bagels stuffed with unusual, delectable fillings like crayfish and cress, English breakfast and sweet strawberries and cream. Patrons can dine inside the cafe or outside on the sidewalk, surrounded by bright blossoms and joyful street music.
Climpson & Sons: Smooth, creamy bliss in a cup warms even the dreariest of London mornings at this coffee shop in East London?s Broadway Market. Opened in 2005, the shop is run by passionate baristas who hand-roast their own beans and top each expertly-made cup with a cheerful heart design. In addition to silky flat whites and bold cappuccinos, Climpson & Sons also offers gourmet goodies such as flaky croissants, moist banana chocolate chip muffins, and scrumptious aubergine feta sandwiches. Patrons enjoy their sips and snacks in a cozy space with sage green walls, beautiful old hardwoods, and vibrant flowers.
Dove Freehouse: Rich wood paneling, cozy hidden nooks, occasional live music, and stacks of board games all cultivate a uniquely welcoming vibe at this landmark pub in Borough Market. Established over two decades ago, Dove Freehouse offers a timeless combination of tasty homemade comfort food and beer galore, including approximately 100 Belgian bottles, an array of ales on tap, yummy ciders, and rare lambics and sours. Pints are paired with pub classics as well as a few Thai and Belgian specialties, with favorites including the fish and chips, hearty bison burger, Waterzooi van Vis (seafood stew), and traditional full breakfast with a secret-recipe Bloody Mary.
F. Cooke: Open for more than a century, this authentic mash and pie shop was established in 1900 to serve traveling shepherds. Today, the family-run eatery remains largely unchanged, still situated in Hackney on the border of Broadway Market. Behind a Victorian glass-and-marble fa?ade, the interior has original yellow and blue tiled walls, marble benches, a long metal counter, and a floor sprinkled with sawdust. The shop serves 100-percent minced beef pies with homemade pastry, mashed potatoes, and ?liquor,? or parsley gravy. As per tradition, F. Cooke is also known for its hot and jellied eel, which tastes similar to pickled herring.
Glitterati: The shop keeps hours more or less according to the whims of its owners, a couple who are specialists, respectively, in vintage watches and Miriam Haskell costume jewelry.
Hostem: The most fashion-forward men in London are raving about this Shoreditch style house established in 2010 by native fashion guru James Brown. Created by innovative design team JamesPlumb, Hostem's three-room interior is strikingly shabby-chic, incorporating an antique church pew, hand-painted hessian walls, reclaimed Victorian floorboards and caged light bulbs dangling just inches above stacks of cashmere. One room focuses on sharp streetwear by labels such as Visvim and Adam Kimmel, while the second room is all about the avante-garde, showcasing the likes of Ann Demeulemeester, MA+ and Rick Owens. The final space serves as a display room for up-and-coming designers.
L?Eau a la Bouche: This Borough Market deli, whose name means "mouthwatering" in French, lives up to its alluring appellation with a smorgasbord of foodie-approved treats. Elaborate displays offer typical deli finds, including quality meats, artisan cheeses, freshly baked bread, and rare olives. You'll also find already-prepared homemade goodies ranging from fluffy quiches to hearty toasted sandwiches like the Italian ham with pesto and sundried tomatoes. Patrons can chow down inside, where reclaimed timber and warm globe lights create an inviting atmosphere, or outside at a sidewalk table where rich coffees and creamy pear flan come with a side of spectacular people-watching.
Labour and Wait: Although its name is actually derived from a Longfellow poem, this charming Shoreditch shop inspires patrons to "labour away" with its enticing selection of everyday home goods, ranging from sleek metal dustpans to hand-knitted dishcloths. Established in 2000 by former menswear designers Rachel Wythe-Moran and Simon Watkins, who had become disillusioned with the demands of ever-changing trends, Labour & Wait specializes in timeless, functional and simplistically beautiful goods from across the globe. The shop itself is tidy and cheerful, brimming with such tempting treasures as pastel milk jugs, ceramic teapots, cozy wool throws, leather diaries, ash-handled trowels and darling aprons.
Old Truman Brewery: Old Truman Brewery here takes its name from a family who started making ales in the late 1600?s. Today, the brewery building is home to almost 200 independent creative companies. It?s connected to Brick Lane by a small pedestrian alley called Dray Walk, over which the brewery towers, and along which the best of Brick Lane?s energy can be experienced: food stands peddle izakaya-style snacks, dosas, empanadas, kebabs and dolma, and eye-watering Goan curries. Small fashion traders with provocatively arcane names (Son of a Stag; A Butcher of Distinction; Public Beware Co.) enjoy fiercely loyal local followings. In and around Brick Lane are multiple markets, including the storied one in adjacent Spitalfields; Thursday, not Sunday, is the connoisseur?s day for antiques.
Pizza East: Fresh clams, cherry tomatoes, garlic, and pecorino; veal meatballs, cream, parsley and lemon; San Daniele ham, buffalo ricotta, hazelnut pesto and baby chard: although such unique topping combos speak for themselves, there's plenty more to say about this Shoreditch pizzeria. Housed in an old tea factory, Pizza East executes industrial-chic style to perfection with exposed concrete, bare wooden tables, oversized chandeliers, and funky touches like tumblers for wine and linen napkins in every shade of the rainbow. And while the pizza is indeed popular, patrons give equal kudos to the antipasti and salted caramel chocolate tart.
Rochelle Canteen: Hidden behind the soaring walls of an old Victorian school playground in residential Shoreditch lies a small converted bike shed housing Rochelle Canteen, a cafe made all the more magical by its secretive location and almost imperceptible buzzer entrance. Run by Melanie Arnold and Margot Henderson of Arnold & Henderson catering, the canteen serves weekday breakfasts and lunches embodying Henderson's head-to-tail culinary philosophy. In the landscaped courtyard or all-white dining room, patrons indulge in daily specials that may include creamy asparagus soup, deep-fried cod cheeks with tartar, and pecan caramel ice cream.
Royal Oak: Although this pub becomes exceptionally busy during the Columbia Road flower market held every Sunday, the Royal Oak is also bustling every other day of the week thanks to its perfectly poured pints and classic comfort foods ranging from steak and ale pie to succulent Sunday roast. The downstairs pub is wood-paneled with haphazard seating arrangements, while the calmer upstairs dining room is all plush furniture and natural light. On market days, patrons can also sip crisp summery ciders on the outside terrace, surrounded by beautiful blooms.
Shoreditch Rooms: Visitors hoping to amp up the glam in London will be pleased by the 26 stylish yet affordable rooms at the ultra-exclusive, members-only Shoreditch House. Opened in 2007 by Soho House founder Nick Jones, the Shoreditch is housed in a renovated warehouse that embodies the concept of industrial-chic cool. Rooms are light and airy with big screen TVs, rainforest showers, and quirky touches like old-fashioned telephones and a "Borrow Me" collection of games and goodies. Guests also enjoy the on-site Cowshed Spa and the many hidden treasures of the Shoreditch House, which range from a bowling alley to an expansive rooftop pool.
Spitalfields Market: London?s oldest market, Spitalfields has a history dating back to 1666. Today, the sprawling marketplace includes both the old market and a newer traders market, which features up to 110 stalls each day. Spitalfields is open Tuesday through Friday as well as Sunday, with Sunday being the most popular day to visit. Shoppers may find everything from designer clothing and handbags to eco-friendly stationery, vintage furniture, handmade jewelry, and bespoke children?s toys. After browsing the stalls, market-goers can dine at a variety of restaurants, including Carluccio?s, Giraffe, and Leon, and attend special events such as concerts and wine tastings.
St. John Bread & Wine: Opened in 2003 across from Spitalfields Market, Bread & Wine is a more casual offshoot of Fergus Henderson and Trevor Gulliver?s St. John Bar & Restaurant. The high-ceilinged dining room, housed in a former bank, has white walls, simple wooden furniture, and a bustling open kitchen. Incorporating fresh seasonal ingredients, dishes from the daily changing menu can be enjoyed as a three-course meal or as a selection of small plates. The menu emphasizes adventurous head-to-tail cooking, with possible options including foie gras and duck liver toast and venison and trotter pie. Wine and baked goods are available to take home.
The Boundary: Designer Terence Conran?s new six-story Boundary complex is making waves in the gritty-glam neighborhood of Shoreditch. Within the converted Victorian printing house: Albion, a perfectly curated high-end food shop and laid-back streetside caf?; a 17-room hotel inspired by design movements from Shaker to Bauhaus; and a subterranean French restaurant. But the space that has crowds lining up around the block is the 2009-opened Boundary Rooftop restaurant and bar (open through October), overlooking East London. The style here is low-key beach-house: white canvas chairs printed with images of cheeky British seaside postcards, a wood-burning stove? on colder nights, staff provide guests with wool blankets?and potted olive trees dotting the patio. Don?t miss the steak and chips, accompanied by the spicy house sangria. Just make sure to get here early; tables are first come, first served.
Town Hall Hotel & Apartments: Singaporean hotelier Peng Loh made his European debut by transforming an Edwardian town hall into a fine-dining restaurant, 98 rooms and apartments, and public spaces that exhibit work by up-and-coming East End artists. The room rates?which are, on average, $250 less than those at other pedigreed hotels in London?are cause for celebration, too. Furnishings are spare and clean-lined, a mixture of Midcentury reissues and new pieces designed by Rare principal Michel da Costa Gon?alves. Conspicuous luxury isn't the order of the day here; one is meant to appreciate having 18-foot ceilings, Tasmanian oak-paneled walls, and original casement windows (and thanks to Rare's subtle ministrations, one probably will). Locals, meanwhile, are coming to sample Viajante, Town Hall's restaurant, where chef Nuno Mendes is turning out consistently imaginative, delicious, seasonal food (despite London's critics meting out only the thinnest, most begrudging praise, as is their bitchy wont).
Viajante: At this experimental East End eatery, adventurous foodies savor a surprise-stocked trip across the globe courtesy of fearlessly creative Portuguese chef Nuno Mendes. Housed in a majestic former town hall, the restaurant comprises two simply chic dining rooms and an open kitchen that offers mesmerizing views of the culinary theatrics. Seasonal prix fixe menus are served "blind" and feature a tantalizing parade of inventive plates which may include a bold galangal and lemongrass-scented confit of chicken sandwich; Iberian pig?s neck with Savoy cabbage and salty explosions of fried caper; and dark chocolate pudding with hazelnut, praline powder and blackcurrant gel.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A rush to quickly report the Supreme Court's decision on President Barack Obama's health care law on Thursday tripped up some news organizations that got it wrong and had to quickly correct themselves.
Both CNN and Fox News Channel initially reported incorrectly that the law's central provision, requiring virtually all Americans to have health insurance, had been struck down. In an apology, CNN said it "regrets that it didn't wait to report out the full and complete opinion regarding the mandate."
The Associated Press got it right, as did other news organizations and broadcast television outlets, generally. A minute after the AP flash alert at 10:07 a.m., The New York Times asked its readers for time, with Washington bureau chief David Leonhardt posting that reporters and editors were analyzing the decision.
"Once we are comfortable with its basic meaning, you can expect a torrent of coverage," he said. The Times next sent news via Twitter at 10:20.
It was a particularly embarrassing muff for CNN, which has suffered through one of its worst ratings quarters in several years, primarily due to a paucity of big news. The network eagerly awaited the Supreme Court's decision Thursday, running a "countdown clock" on its screen during the morning ticking down to 10 a.m.
Anchor Wolf Blitzer and reporter Kate Bolduan quickly reported that the health care law was struck down, based on a reading of Chief Justice John Roberts' decision that the mandate was not a valid exercise of congressional power under the commerce clause. Later in the reading, the justices found other reasons for upholding that portion of the law.
CNN's screen read: "Supreme Ct. Kills Individual Mandate."
"The court striking down that mandate is a dramatic blow to the president," said John King, CNN reporter.
The network also sent an email reporting that the mandate had been struck down and posted the news on Twitter.
By 10:13 a.m., some doubt had seeped in and the onscreen headline read: "Supreme Court Rules on Obama Law."
"Let's take a deep breath and see what the justices actually decided," Blitzer said. "It could be more complicated than we originally thought."
By 10:15, the network was reporting that the entire law had been upheld, and King called it "a huge, huge victory for President Obama."
Fox made the same initial mistake, with Bill Hemmer touting the "breaking news" that the individual mandate had been declared unconstitutional. Fox anchor Bret Baier tweeted the same news. Within two minutes, however, Megyn Kelly was citing the SCOTUSblog in casting doubt on that interpretation, even ordering producers to change an onscreen headline that read: "Supreme Court Finds Health Care Individual Mandate Unconstitutional."
"We're trying to do the best we can," Hemmer said.
Michael Clemente, Fox executive vice president of news and editorial, was unapologetic. "We gave our viewers the news as it happened ... Fox reported the facts, as they came in."
Several members of Congress tweeted incorrect information about the ruling, perhaps based on the initial misreading by cable networks.
Republican Rep. Darrell Issa of California called it a "big win for liberty and the Constitution. Rep. Tom Rooney (R, Fla.) said it was "great news for the American people, victory for constitution."
On CBS, Jan Crawford spoke on the air as she scanned the decision. "It appears, based on our quick summary, that the mandate, the individual mandate at the heart of this case may be in jeopardy under one provision of the constitution but they may have upheld the mandate under another provision."
ABC initially bobbled one detail ? calling the ruling 6-3 instead of 5-4 ? but correctly reported the outcome in a special report by Terry Moran. NBC's Pete Williams said that "the bottom line here is the Supreme Court has upheld the health care law."

Two-time winner Rafael Nadal and British hope Andy Murray reached the Wimbledon second round, but Australia's men slumped to their country's worst performance since 1938.
Nadal, fresh from a record-breaking seventh French Open win, enjoyed a 7-6 (7/0), 6-2, 6-3 victory over Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci despite having trailed 4-0 in the first set.
"It's always tough to make the change from clay to grass, especially when over the last couple of months I played almost every match on tour. Physically you start having some troubles," admitted Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 champion.
"I'm very happy to be back on probably the best court in the world and winning in three sets is good for me."
Fourth seed Murray, a semi-finalist for the last three years, had the last laugh as he silenced Nikolay Davydenko's taunts with an easy 6-1, 6-1, 6-4 win.
The Russian had claimed players laughed at the Briton, believing he regularly exaggerates his injuries.
"I'm desperate to get the tournament going because there's a lot of talk from a lot of people," said Murray.
Serena Williams, the 2002, 2003, 2009 and 2010 champion, reached the second round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic.
The American sixth seed triumphed on the same Court Two where sister Venus had on Monday suffered her first opening round loss at Wimbledon since 1997.
"It always has some sort of an effect," said Serena of her sister's loss. "I always want to play even better if she's out of the tournament."
Defending champion Petra Kvitova overcame early nerves to progress 6-4, 6-4 against Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan, but the 22-year-old Czech fourth seed did it the hard way, having trailed 3-0 and 4-1 in the first set.
World number two Victoria Azarenka eased through, seeing off America's Irina Falconi 6-1, 6-4.
Lleyton Hewitt's 10th anniversary party of his 2002 title was gatecrashed by French fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who cruised to a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win, handing the Australian his earliest exit at the All England Club since 2003.
His loss also meant that there will be no Australian man in the second round for the first time since 1938 after compatriots Bernard Tomic, a quarter-finalist last year and seeded 20, Matthew Ebdon and Marinko Matosevic were also beaten.
It is a depressing statistic for a country which has won 21 Wimbledon men's titles.
The injury-plagued Hewitt, 31, whose ranking has plummeted to 202 after undergoing radical surgery to cut bone out of his big toe, refused to entertain any notion that the problems of Australian tennis mirrored a decline in the country's sporting prowess in general.
"I reckon we'll go all right at the Olympics," he said.
American hopes, which were so badly bruised by the opening day exits of five-time champion Venus and big-serving John Isner, were earlier boosted by Mardy Fish and Bryan Baker.
Fish made a winning return to tennis in his first match following an operation to address a frightening heart scare.
The world number 12 beat Spain's Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo 7-6 (7/3), 7-5 7-6 (7/1), but later felt unwell and pulled out of a mandatory post-match press conference.
Baker, who lost six years of his career to an assortment of injuries and underwent five operations, clinched a first ever win at Wimbledon, beating Portugal's Rui Machado 7-6 (7/2), 6-4, 6-0.
Juan Martin Del Potro, the ninth seeded Argentine and 2009 US Open winner, also went through, beating Dutchman Robin Haase 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 7-5.
Rain brought an early end to the second day with three-time runner-up Andy Roddick a set and a break up on Britain's Jamie Baker.
Spanish seventh seed David Ferrer was two sets up against Germany's Dustin Brown while Austria's Jurgen Melzer was just a point away from beating Swiss 25th seed Stanislas Wawrinka.

Obesity is a disorder in which fat cells grow larger and accumulate. Certain proteins, called WNT family proteins, function to prevent fat cell formation. However, the activity of WNT proteins can be inhibited by secreted frizzled-related proteins (SFRPs), thus leading to fat cell generation. You could say that the odds of seeing it were astronomical.
Yet there it was, 10 billion light-years from Earth, the most massive galaxy cluster ever seen at such a distance ? with a gravity field so strong that it distorted the light of the galaxy behind it in a rare display called gravitational lensing.
"When I first saw it, I kept staring at it, thinking it would go away," said University of Florida astronomer Anthony Gonzalez, lead author of the study announcing the discovery. "The galaxy behind the cluster is a typical run-of-the-mill galaxy with a lot of young stars, but the galaxy cluster in front of it is a whopper for that range. However, it's really the way that the two systems are lined up that makes the occurrence truly remarkable."
Gravitational lensing, or bending of light from the distant galaxy, has never been observed behind a cluster at this range.
The team reports its findings in the July 10 issue of The Astrophysical Journal.
The cluster's mass is noteworthy because its distance from the telescope, 10 billion light-years, means that it was already in existence when the universe was only one-quarter of its present age. Currently accepted models for how the universe evolved suggest that relatively few of these clusters were around when the universe was young.
Just finding the cluster itself might be considered lucky considering the team was exploring a mere 9-square degree patch of sky.
"If you extend your arm in front of you and hold up your index finger," Gonzalez said. "Your finger covers approximately 1-square degree of sky." So finding a massive cluster at that range that is also gravitationally lensing is a real long shot, even if you were looking at the whole sky, he said.
Researchers initially found the cluster using NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. But they first saw evidence of the gravitational lensing in 2010 images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. They used data from the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy, or CARMA, radio telescope and NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory to independently verify its mass and distance.
Gonzalez said that finding a cluster of that magnitude at that distance in such a small field of observation could mean that scientists have underestimated how many massive clusters were in existence 10 billion years ago. In other words, perhaps the odds of spotting the cluster were not as great as the models predict.
"We just don't know," he said. "We need to find more clusters at this range so that we can get more data. So far we only have one example to study."
And you might say that they are lucky to have that.

ANNAPOLIS, MD- The Government Accountability Office issued this report last week examining the nation?s Housing Finance Agencies? use of the Tax Credit Assistant Program funds. According to The National Council of State and Housing Agencies? assessment of the report, the GAO had found that HFAs, like DHCD, have been successful in their implementation of TCAP.
TCAP funds were administered by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Recovery Act was implemented after the faltering of home income tax credit in 2008 and continued decline in 2009. The TCAP funds where meant to provide supplemental grants to HFAs so they may pursue housing projects and revitalize local economies.
Because of HFAs? monitoring of building sites and construction zones, heavy reliance on experienced staff and effective communication between local bureaucratic agents and federal authorizes, the GAO found that TCAP funds where used optimally to reinvigorate the housing markets on the state level.
The DHCD received $31.7 million out of the $54 million it requested of the TCAP funds. The DHCD awarded the funds to 15 different community development projects, which in turn produced 1,400 new home units and over 750 new jobs. The DHCD efforts have poured $204 million back into Maryland?s economy.

It was over a year ago now that we heard about the WiFi Alliance's intention to certify hotspots and simplify the potential for mobile handovers. Now, it's just announced hardware testing of its WiFi-CERTIFIED Passpoint program, which promises to let phones and mobile devices automatically discover and connect to compatible networks. The specification used is the result of cooperation between service providers and equipment manufacturers, with the aim of creating an industry-wide solution for shared WiFi access and roaming agreements. Already hardware from the likes of Cisco, Intel, MediaTek and Qualcomm has received Passpoint certification, leaving the ball in the court of service providers, once testing is complete.

How might the potential firing of Ann Curry bring about a reunion between one of TV's most beloved tandems? Well...
Rumors are circulating that if when Curry is let go by The Today Show, her seat will be filled by Hota Kotb, who currently hosts the program's fourth hour alongside Kathie Lee Gifford.
This, of course, would leave an empty chair alongside Kathie Lee... and it might be occupied by Regis Philbin, sources say!
Philbin and Gifford, of course, spent years by each other's side on Live! every morning until the latter left in 2001 and was replaced by Kelly Ripa. Regis then retired from the program this year.
NBC "absolutely loves Regis, and want to formally sign him to become a special contributor to Today and work with the network on entertainment specials," an insider tells Radar Online. "If Hoda is chosen to become Matt Lauer's co-anchor, Regis would be the natural choice to replace her."
Would you want to see Regis and Kathie Lee reunite on Today?

Seattle, WA (PRWEB)?Internet marketing for beginners training is something that is not easy to find online. There are many successful businessmen and women that have found success marketing products and services to consumers. Few training programs are available to teach the updated information necessary for beginners to start an Internet business and begin making money quickly. Marketer?s Black Book, the Internet marketing experts, have developed a new and powerful quick start system that teaches the very same 10 steps that the company founders have used to generate a full-time income with no prior business or Internet knowledge. The new training is revealed in 10 easy to follow lessons that can accessed online. The free steps to earning $10,000 a month completely online are available athttp://www.marketersblackbook.com/income-report/quick-start.html.
The business training that is traditionally taught in universities is useful for learners to use this education in the offline world. Jobs in the financial sector, public or private corporations and government employment are common career paths for business graduates. The e-commerce industry has improved the way that businesses conduct transactions online and the way that consumers spend disposable income. Internet marketing is the practice of marketing to online consumers without using the same tactics that are successful for marketers in the offline world.
?Industries like real estate, construction, medical and dental are all transitioning to gain a market share and get a piece of consumer spending,? said Ryan Bush, real estate expert and co-founder of Marketer?s Black Book. ?Entrepreneurs and investors have been behind some of the most influential products and services in the last decade thanks in part to the useful techniques used in Internet marketing,? Bush added.
It is relatively easy to use a domain name registrar to obtain a domain name or pay a web designer to design a website. These costs have fallen in price in the last decade due to more competition in the online marketplace. The millions of domain names and websites that appear online each year are making it more difficult for a company website or individually owned website to be within the first 10 to 20 positions in search engines like Yahoo or Google.
Someone that is learning how to start a new online business or to market one that is already started could benefit from the quick start income report now available from Marketer?s Black Book. Attracting Internet visitors to a website is even something that the largest corporations in the world struggle with doing business online. Learning to build organic website traffic and using paid systems more productively is some of the information that is taught in the new income quick start guide.
