Feds: 'Meterological March madness' mostly random
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Freak chance was mostly to blame for the record warm March weather that gripped two-thirds of the country, with man-made global warming providing only a tiny assist, a quick federal analysis shows.
For much of March, record temperatures hit as high as 35 degrees above normal and averaged about 18 degrees warmer than usual. The United States broke or tied at least 7,733 daily high temperature records in March, which is far more than the number of records broken in last summer's heat wave or in a blistering July 1995 heat wave, according to federal records.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration analyzed the causes and chances of what it nicknamed "meteorological March madness." Meteorologist Martin Hoerling said the main cause was a persistent warm wind sending toasty air north from the Gulf of Mexico. The study is not peer-reviewed and some outside scientists say it is short-sighted.
"Climate change was certainly a factor, but it was certainly a minor factor," Hoerling said.
He said the bigger issue was wind patterns. Low pressure in the Pacific Northwest and high pressure in New England created a perfect funnel, like the gutter lane in a bowling alley, for warm air in the Gulf of Mexico to head north. That air is about 15 to 20 degrees warmer than the air in the Midwest. From time to time that air heads north, but what is unusual is that the wind pattern stayed that way for about two weeks.
"''Why wouldn't we embrace it as a darn good outcome," Hoerling said. "This was not the wicked wind of the east. This was the good wind of the south."
For example, Chicago had nine straight record hot days, eight of them over 80 degrees when usually that city doesn't hit 80 until late June.
Hoerling said it's hard at this early point to apportion blame for an event so massive and rare. This seems to be about a once-in-century type event. If this were a once in 40 years type heat wave, as initially predicted, it would be fair to say the chance of it happening is about five part randomness to one part manmade global warming.
"It is a freak event that appeared to have perhaps a freak ancestor, 1910," Hoerling said. In that year there was a similar heat wave.
Hoerling analyzed March temperatures and compared them to past decades and found that since 2001, March has been nearly 2 degrees warmer in much of the country than the 1960-1990 average. So he said that's about 10 percent of the added heat.
Hoerling said a lot of people have worried that if March was this hot, what would June be like. But the March weather has little relation to what comes in summer, Hoerling said. "This is not the new reality," he said.
Climate scientists said the world should expect more extreme weather ? like the March heat wave ? as the climate changes. But they also hesitate to attribute single weather events to global warming.
Penn State University climate scientist Michael Mann said the longer term view is more important.
"This winter and spring we're breaking warmth records at more than 10 times the rate we'd expect naturally," Mann said in an email. "So while it is true that individual weather events represent the random rolls of the weather dice, human-caused climate change has loaded those dice. That's why we're seeing 'sixes' come up far more often than we'd expect from chance alone."

Relationship 101: Communication Skills vs. Relationship Skills ...
(ModelMeGirl.com)
Human beings are social by design. It has nothing to do with evolution; but everything to do with how God created us.
Some of us have mastered the art of communication by modeling the behavior of others; exposure to or immersion into highly social families, situations and environments; and lastly, by formal education.
We hear phrases like, ?You?re just like your mother or father.? Some of these ?just likes,? which I like to call them, are innate. Others are learned and mirrored.
This can be the same with communication skills. Some of us have a natural gift and others have to be trained more diligently.
Communication Skills vs. Relationship Skills
Communication skills and relationship skills differ in many ways; but we tend to lump them together.
Communication is sharing a message. This involves sending, receiving and decoding the message.
The girl on the other end of the phone, who works in customer service, may have stellar communication skills when it comes to dealing with customers on the job. But her relationship skills, when it comes to building and maintaining friendships or connections, may suck.
A display of communication skills can easily be just for show. The question is, ?Can you relate to people on a deeper, kinder, forgiving and empathetic level??
If you ever watched the movie, ?Rush Hour,? you may recall when Chris Tucker?s character asked Jackie Chan?s character, ?Do you understand the words that are coming out of my mouth?? That was an attempt at successful communication.
Relationship skills ask, ?Do you understand the words that are coming out of my heart??
Matthew 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. (KJV)
Relationship skills rely on communication skills. Yet, you can have communication without having a relationship. Solid relationship skills display truth, humility, compassion, respect, forgiveness, interest, time and commitment. You see the key is this: Relationship skills depend on understanding and perception.
Isaiah 6:9?He said, ?Go and tell this people: ??Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.? (NIV)
Many people speak and pray to God. They are communicating. But the same people may not have a relationship with Him. They may come to God out of habit or as a chore; and not from a place of love and neediness. They may not worship or praise God; or even read their Bible to grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. When you attain deeper knowledge about anyone, your relationship matures.
You may live in the house with your children or spouse. Or you may be a young girl and live with your parents. You may speak to them everyday?communication. But do you really know them? Do you spend purposeful and quality time with them? Do you have unity? Do you have a relationship?
God & Relationships
Every one of the Ten Commandments that God gave has to do with relationships?how we relate to others.
- How we relate to God
- How we relate to people
When you relate to someone, you have a connection that is beyond superficial. Being able to relate to someone is the start of building a healthy relationship. You are involved and concerned, at some degree, with that person and his or her life.
God loves young women, and He is concerned about our relationships?with Him and with the people around us. Some of us have been broken into so many pieces; we don?t know what to do with ourselves. The enemy of our souls would love nothing more than for shattered dreams, disappointments and broken hearts to turn into bitterness, resentment, grudges and hate.
Relationship Woes? Let God Fix You
If you?re looking for God to fix a broken relationship in your life, consider this. First, He wants to start with you. God wants to fix your relationship with Him. So often we say, ?Lord, work on that person, that person, and that person.? But we may be the most pitiful one of them all. Allow God to start with you, and He will work out relationships in your life. It is an invitation to lead you down the path of righteousness. In case you?re wondering, righteousness is about having a right standing with God?a relationship.
Whether or not someone else meets you half-way, you?ll be able to hold up your end of any relationship and be pleasing to God if you allow Him to work on you.
Stay tuned for more Relationship 101 with Model Me Girl.

Details emerge about bin Laden's other residences

HARIPUR, Pakistan (AP) ? It's an ornate but not lavish two-story house tucked away at the end of a mud clogged street. This is where Pakistan's intelligence agency believes Osama bin Laden lived for nearly a year until he moved into the villa in which he was eventually killed.
The residence in the frontier town of Haripur was one of five safe houses used by the slain al-Qaida leader while on the run in Pakistan according to information revealed by his youngest wife, who has been detained.
Retired Pakistani Brig. Shaukat Qadir, who has spent the last eight months tracking bin Laden's movements, told The Associated Press that he was taken to the Haripur house last November by intelligence agents who located it from a description they got from Amal Ahmed Abdel-Fatah al-Sada.
Al-Sada, a 30-year-old Yemeni, has been in Pakistani custody since May 2 when U.S. Navy SEALs overran the Abbottabad compound, killing bin Laden and four other people inside. Since then, Pakistan's intelligence agency, known as the ISI, has been trying to uncover the trail that brought him to Abbottabad villa in the summer of 2005.
The best information appears to have come from al-Sada, who was believed to be his favorite and who traveled with bin Laden since his escape from Afghanistan's eastern Tora Bora mountain range in 2001.
Qadir, a 35-year army veteran who is now a security consultant, was given rare access to transcripts of Pakistani intelligence's interrogation of al-Sada and access to other documents on bin-Laden's movements. He provided the AP with details in a recent interview.
The details of bin Laden's life as a fugitive ? which were first published by the Pakistani newspaper Dawn ? raise fresh questions over how bin Laden was able to remain undetected for so long in Pakistan after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, despite being the subject of a massive international manhunt.
Yet a senior U.S. official, who is familiar with the contents recovered in bin Laden's Abbottabad house, said there was no evidence that Pakistani officials were aware of bin Laden's presence. "There was no smoking gun. We didn't find anything," he said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the contents of the Abbottabad house
According to the interrogation report, bin Laden lived in five safe houses and fathered four children ? the two youngest born in a public hospital in Abbotabad. But investigators have only located the houses in Abbottabad and Haripur.
Al-Sada's descriptions of the homes have been vague and the Haripur house was found only after a series of hits and misses.
She knew only that it was located on the edge of Haripur, it was two stories and it had a basement. It apparently was used by bin Laden while he waited for construction crews to finish his new home Abbottabad, a garrison town just 30 kilometers (20 miles) away.
Investigators scoured the area looking for properties until they found the Haripur house in Naseem Town, a chaotic suburb where relatively affluent houses bump up against sun-baked mud huts that belong to nomadic Afghans.
Like the CIA, the Pakistani agency also tracked the movements of bin Laden's Pakistani courier who used the pseudonym Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti and his brother. The two were ethnic Pashtuns from Pakistan's Khyber Pukhtunkhwa province on the border with Afghanistan. They were bin Laden's front men.
The ISI discovered that the Haripur house, like the land on which bin Laden's Abbottabad villa was built, was rented by two Pashtun brothers claiming to be from Charsadda, a Pashtun dominated town about 110 kilometers (80 miles) away.
The AP located the Haripur house that Qadir said ISI agents had taken him to last November and found the real estate broker, Pir Mohammed, who rented the four-bedroom house to the two brothers, Salim and Javed Khan from Charsadda, for $150 a month.
At the time Pir Mohammed ran a small real estate firm called Mashallah. He said his meeting with the brothers was random.
"They must have seen my sign and come in," Mohammed said, adding that he had met the brothers only three times ? when they signed the contract, when they moved into the house and when they moved out 11 months later.
Two months ago several ISI agents took all the records of the house and its tenants since its construction in 2000, said Qasi Anis Rahman, the brother of the widow who owns the house.
"All they said was that it was for 'security purposes,'" said Rahman.
Al-Sada is currently in Pakistani custody, along with bin Laden's two other wives and several children. They were arrested after the raid. The U.S. Navy SEALs shot al-Sada in the leg during the operation.
Mohammed Amir Khalil, a lawyer for the three widows, said the women would be formally charged for illegally staying in Pakistan on April 2. That charge carries a maximum five-year prison sentence.
