HOMS, Syria (AP) ? Syrian security forces opened fire Thursday on tens of thousands protesting outside a mosque in a Damascus suburb, close to a municipal building that members of the Arab League monitoring mission were visiting. Activists said at least four people were killed.

The ongoing violence, and new questions about the human rights record of the head of the Arab League monitors, are reinforcing the opposition's view that Syria's limited cooperation with the observers is nothing more than a farce for President Bashar Assad's regime to buy time and forestall more international condemnation and sanctions.

Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said about 20,000 people were protesting outside the Grand Mosque in the Damascus suburb of Douma when troops opened fire. Some Arab League monitors were visiting a municipal building close to the mosque, he said.

The 60 Arab League monitors, who began work Tuesday, are the first Syria has allowed in during the nine-month anti-government uprising. They are supposed to ensure the regime complies with terms of the Arab League plan to end Assad's nine-month crackdown on dissent. The U.N. says more than 5,000 people have died in the uprising since March.

The plan, which Syria agreed to on Dec. 19, demands that the government remove its security forces and heavy weapons from cities, start talks with the opposition and allow human rights workers and journalists into the country. It also calls for the release of all political prisoners.

Syria has allowed the monitors in, released about 800 prisoners and pulled some of its tanks from the city of Homs. But it has continued to shoot and kill unarmed protesters and has not lived up to any other terms of the agreement.

Syria's top opposition leader, Burhan Ghalioun, told reporters in Cairo after meeting Arab League Chief Nabil Elaraby that the aim of the mission is not only to observe, but to make sure that the Syrian government is "stopping the killing and shooting." He added that the Syrian government is holding more than 100,000 detainees, "some of them held in military barracks and aboard ships off the Syrian coast." He added: "There is real danger that the regime might kill them to say there are no prisoners."

State-run TV said monitors also visited the Damascus suburb of Harasta, the central city of Hama and the southern province of Daraa, where the uprising against Assad began in March.

The Observatory said a total of 16 people have been shot by security forces and killed so far on Thursday, most of them in several suburbs of Damascus. The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said 28 people were killed. The differing death tolls could not be immediately reconciled as Syria bans most foreign journalists and keeps tight restrictions on the local media.

Leading opposition members are calling on the Cairo-based Arab League to remove the Sudanese head of the monitoring mission because he was a senior official in the "oppressive regime" of President Omar al-Bashir, who is under an international arrest warrant on charges of committing genocide in Darfur.

The head of the mission, Lt. Gen. Mohamed Ahmed Mustafa al-Dabi, is a longtime loyalist of al-Bashir and once served as his head of Sudanese military intelligence.

Amnesty International said under al-Dabi's command, military intelligence in the early 1990s "was responsible for the arbitrary arrest and detention, enforced disappearance, and torture or other ill-treatment of numerous people in Sudan."

In Germany, Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle demanded "unhindered access" for the Arab League observers to all key points in Syria, his ministry said Thursday. That includes not just cities such as Homs, but "also the possibility to speak unhindered with representatives of the opposition, civil society and with prisoners of the regime," a ministry statement said.

Westerwelle "expects from the observer mission a thorough approach and a clear, unvarnished picture of the situation," it added.

The Syrian government organized a tour to the restive central city of Homs, where one team of monitors has been working for the last three days. A Syrian official in Homs said six observers were there on Thursday.

At the entrance to the city, which witnessed much of the violence in the past months, two checkpoints were stopping cars and asking for people's identity cards. Inside, most shops were closed and streets had few people and cars as sporadic gunfire rang out. Most main streets were clean, but sidestreets were lined with dozens of garbage bags.

At the military hospital, one of the largest in the city, a large number of civilians and members of the military were receiving treatment. One of them was a soldier who was shot in the stomach while in a Homs street Thursday morning. He was undergoing an operation, his mother said.

"My son did not harm anyone. He is a soldier to protect the country," said his mother, Zeinab Jaroud, as she stood holding back here tears outside the operating room.

Brig. Gen. Ali Assi, head of the Military Hospital in Homs, told The Associated Press that in the past months, they have treated civilians, members of the military and police as well as gunmen. He said the between March 25 and Nov. 11, the hospital treated 1,819 soldiers, 251 policemen and 232 civilians. He added that 557 people, mostly soldiers, either died in the hospital or were brought dead.

The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, December 29, 2011.

Active weather will continue across the northern tier of the nation on Thursday as a very active jet stream sends more disturbances across the North. A cold front extending through the Pacific Northwest and moist westerly flow will move through the Northern Intermountain West, bringing showers, periods of heavy rain, high elevation snowfall, and strong winds to parts of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming Wednesday night through Thursday. Snow accumulations in the mountains are expected to range from about 10 to 20 inches, while snow totals of about 2 to 8 inches are expected in the lower valleys. Sustained winds of 25 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph may accompany precipitation in Montana and Wyoming. These conditions may create periods of blowing and drifting snow, reduced visibilities, slick roads, and ultimately hazardous road conditions for travelers. Precipitation from this system is expected to spread into the Dakotas and Nebraska Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, precipitation will continue in the Pacific Northwest through the day, before the next and last system in this series of storms arrives Thursday night into Friday. Expect wet and windy weather with locally heavy rainfall and significant snowfall above 3,500 feet to accompany this system.

In the Midwest, a clipper will slide across North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Lake Michigan with a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow through the afternoon. Areas of snow will be possible in parts of North Dakota in the morning and in Michigan. Snowfall amounts from this system are not expected to be very impressive. Up to 1 to 2 inches will be possible in parts of northern Michigan.

In the East, a cold blustery day is expected in the Northeast on Thursday as cold air continues to surge in on brisk west winds. Precipitation in region should taper off as high pressure builds in Thursday. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday have ranged from a morning low of -13 degrees at Grand Marais Airport, Minn. to a high of 80 degrees at Ramona, Calif.

Case Closed? Columbus Introduced Syphilis to Europe (LiveScience.com)

In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue, but when he returned from 'cross the seas, did he bring with him a new disease?

New skeletal evidence suggests Columbus and his crew not only introduced the Old World to the New World, but brought back syphilis as well, researchers say.

Syphilis is caused by Treponema pallidum bacteria, and is usually curable nowadays with antibiotics. Untreated, it can damage the heart, brain, eyes and bones; it can also be fatal.

The first known epidemic of syphilis occurred during the Renaissance in 1495. Initially its plague broke out among the army of Charles the VIII after the French king invaded Naples. It then proceeded to devastate Europe, said researcher George Armelagos, a skeletal biologist at Emory University in Atlanta.

"Syphilis has been around for 500 years," said researcher Molly Zuckerman at Mississippi State University. "People started debating where it came from shortly afterward, and they haven't stopped since. It was one of the first global diseases, and understanding where it came from and how it spread may help us combat diseases today."

Stigmatized disease

The fact that syphilis is a stigmatized sexually transmitted disease has added to the controversy over its origins. People often seem to want to blame some other country for it, said researcher Kristin Harper, an evolutionary biologist at Emory. [Top 10 Stigmatized Health Disorders]

Armelagos originally doubted the so-called Columbian theory for syphilis when he first heard about it decades ago. "I laughed at the idea that a small group of sailors brought back this disease that caused this major European epidemic," he recalled. Critics of the Columbian theory have proposed that syphilis had always bedeviled the Old World but simply had not been set apart from other rotting diseases such as leprosy until 1500 or so.

However, upon further investigation, Armelagos and his colleagues got a shock ? all of the available evidence they found supported the Columbian theory, findings they published in 1988. "It was a paradigm shift," Armelagos says. Then in 2008, genetic analysis by Armelagos and his collaborators of syphilis's family of bacteria lent further support to the theory.

Still, there have been reports of 50 skeletons from Europe dating back from before Columbus set sail that apparently showed the lesions of chronic syphilis. These seemed to be evidence that syphilis originated in the Old World and that Columbus was not to blame.

Armelagos and his colleagues took a closer look at all the data from these prior reports. They found most of the skeletal material didn't actually meet at least one of the standard diagnostic criteria for chronic syphilis, such as pitting on the skull, known as caries sicca, and pitting and swelling of the long bones.

"There's no really good evidence of a syphilis case before 1492 in Europe," Armelagos told LiveScience.

In the seafood?

The 16 reports that did meet the criteria for syphilis came from coastal regions where seafood was a large part of the diet. This seafood contains "old carbon" from deep, upwelling ocean waters. As such, they might fall prey to the so-called "marine reservoir effect" that can throw off radiocarbon dating of a skeleton by hundreds or even thousands of years. To adjust for this effect, the researchers figured out the amount of seafood these individuals ate when alive. Since our bodies constantly break down and rebuild our bones, measurements of bone-collagen protein can provide a record of diet.

"Once we adjusted for the marine signature, all of the skeletons that showed definite signs of treponemal disease appeared to be dated to after Columbus returned to Europe," Harper said, findings detailed in the current Yearbook of Physical Anthropology.

"What it really shows to me is that globalization of disease is not a modern condition," Armelagos said. "In 1492, you had the transmission of a number of diseases from Europe that decimated Native Americans, and you also had disease from Native Americans to Europe."

"The lesson we can learn for today from history is that these epidemics are the result of unrest," Armelagos added. "With syphilis, wars were going on in Europe at the time, and all the turmoil set the stage for the disease. Nowadays, a lot of diseases jump the species barrier due to environmental unrest."

"The origin of syphilis is a fascinating, compelling question," Zuckerman said. "The current evidence is pretty definitive, but we shouldn't close the book and say we're done with the subject. The great thing about science is constantly being able to understand things in a new light."

Syria fighting kills 13 ahead of Arab monitor visit (Reuters)

BEIRUT (Reuters) ? Thirteen people were killed as Syrian armored forces battled opponents of President Bashar al-Assad in Homs on Monday, residents said, ahead of a planned visit by Arab League monitors to verify whether he is ending a violent crackdown on unrest.

A day before observers were to have their first look at the city at the heart of a nine-month-old uprising, there was no sign of Assad implementing a plan agreed with the League to halt military repression of protests and start talks with opponents.

With an armed insurgency increasingly eclipsing civilian protests, many fear Syria is drifting towards sectarian war pitting majority Sunni Muslims against Assad's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, especially after a double suicide bombing in Damascus on Thursday that killed 44 people.

"The Baba Amr (district) (of Homs) is being exposed to fierce shelling from heavy machinegun fire, armored vehicles and mortars," the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Right said in a statement.

"The violence is definitely two-sided," said a Homs resident who named himself only as Mohammed to protect his safety. "I've been seeing ambulances filled with wounded soldiers passing by my window in the past days. They're getting shot somehow."

Parts of Homs are defended by the Free Syrian Army, made up of defectors from the regular armed forces, who say they have tried to establish no-go areas to protect civilians.

The Observatory documented names of those reported killed in Monday's clashes that began with raids and arrests by pro-Assad forces, which were also reported in Syria's second city of Aleppo, which had been spared from the upheaval until recently.

The initial 50 of 150 Arab League monitors were due to arrive in Syria on Monday, and some will go to Homs on Tuesday, a source at the organization's headquarters Cairo told Reuters. Their job will be to assess whether Assad is going to withdraw tanks and troops from Syria's third largest city as promised.

"The Arab monitoring team will visit Homs as it is the most turbulent place," the source said.

Syrian state television has regularly shown some areas of the city of one million looking peaceful. But activist video posted on the internet shows other parts looking like a war zone of empty streets, bodies and shattered house fronts.

Syria has barred most foreign journalists since the revolt began, making it hard to verify reports of events on the ground.

TEN-MAN TEAMS, SPLIT FIVE WAYS

The United Nations says at least 5,000 Syrians have been killed the revolt, inspired by other Arab uprisings this year that have toppled three dictators, broke out in March - and an estimated one-third of deaths have occurred in and around Homs.

Assad says his government is facing an insurgency by gangs of terrorists. Arab League states persuaded him, after six weeks of threats and cajoling, to let 150 observers in to witness what is really happening on the ground.

The first group of about 50 monitors, led by Sudanese General Mustafa Dabi, will be divided into five 10-man teams going to five locations.

"We're waiting. Let's see," said Homs resident Mohammed. "We hope they work the way they should. We hope they will be neutral ... If they are neutral they will be condemning everyone but most especially the (Syrian) authorities because they are the ones who should be responsible for protecting people."

He said some Homs districts were running out of food.

"My friends in Baba Amr, who have nothing to do with the troubles, say they don't have bread. They are under siege."

Arab League mission chief Dabi arrived in Damascus on Friday while the capital was reeling from twin suicide bombings last week that marked an ominous escalation of the violence.

Assad's opponents say they suspect his government carried out the Damascus bombings itself to prove to the world that Syria is facing indiscriminate violence by armed Islamists and to intimidate the work of the Arab League monitors.

Assad's opponents have voiced skepticism about the Arab mission to oversee a peace plan they say Assad will not honor, given the continuing fierce repression against demonstrators.

The Syrian authorities blame the violence on foreign-backed armed Islamists who they say have killed 2,000 members of the security forces since the unrest flared in March.

ONE WEEK ENOUGH TO ASSESS COMPLIANCE

Dabi said he had met Arab League chief Nabil Elaraby in Cairo before departing for Damascus, laying down a "road map" for the mission's work, which he promised would be transparent.

In remarks carried on the Egyptian state news agency, Dabi said the mission would meet different groups in Syria, including the armed forces and members of the opposition.

It was not known if Syrian authorities would give the monitors enough freedom of movement to do their job properly.

Syrian state media have not reported Dabi's arrival.

After six weeks of stalling, Syria signed a protocol this month to admit the monitors under the plan calling for an end to violence, the withdrawal of troops from the streets, the release of prisoners and a reform-minded dialogue with the opposition.

Elaraby said it would take only a week to find out if the authorities are respecting the terms of its peace plan.

Burhan Ghalioun, head of the opposition Syrian National Council, said the League, which has imposed sanctions and suspended Syria's membership, should step up pressure on Assad's by asking the U.N. Security Council to adopt the Arab initiative.

"We want this regime to leave so that we can live in peace. The world should not stand watching over the bodies of men, women and children," the exiled opposition leader said in a Christmas video address to Syrians.

Assad, 46, succeeded his father in 2000 to carry on a dynasty that has ruled for 41 years. He has responded to popular calls to step down with a mixture of force and promises of reform, announcing an end to a state of emergency, giving citizenship to tens of thousands of Syrian Kurds, and promising a parliamentary election in February.

Three reasons Microsoft's Bing will gain ground against Google in 2012

By Preston Gralla

Bing recently became the second most popular search site on the Internet, but is still far behind to Google. Here are three reasons Bing will narrow that gap in 2012.

Bing partnerships with Facebook and Twitter will pay off

In 2011, Bing partnered with both Facebook and Twitter, something that Google didn't do. Instead, Google is relying on Google+, which is a great social network, but with a tiny market share compared to Facebook and Twitter. Facebook, for example, has an estimated 800 million users. That partnership helped Bing improve its overall market share in 2011, and will likely yield even bigger results in 2012.

Bing integration with Xbox and Kinect will help

Xbox has been one of Microsoft's biggest and most surprising successes outside operating systems, Office, and the enterprise. In 2011, Microsoft improved integration with both Xbox and the newer Kinect gaming system. This will pay off in 2012 as well. And because the gaming demographic is a young one, if Microsoft can get gamers to use Bing instead of Google, they'll have a highly sought after audience for advertisers.

Bigger reach in mobile will grow market share

Because of the success of Android, which uses Google as the default search engine, and because iOS uses Google for search, Google has dominated mobile search. It will continue to do so in 2012, but Microsoft will make gains. In November, Microsoft released a very good updated Bing app for Android and iOS, and it's better in some ways than Google's mobile search. In addition, expect Windows Phone 7 to finally gain market share in 2012, as the Nokia deal goes into full effect. I don't expect significant market share, but any will be an improvement over the minuscule share Microsoft now has.

I'm not alone in thinking that Microsoft's moves in 2011 will pay off in 2012. Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy, told Computerworld "I believe Microsoft won the overall rivalry this year in terms of overall growth and strategic moves," citing specifically "improved integration of social media, the Bing iOS app, and Bing for Xbox and Kinect."

Does this mean that Microsoft will overtake Google or even come close in 2012? Not a chance. It think it's unlikely Microsoft will ever catch Google. But consider that Google fears Bing enough that it will pay Mozilla nearly $1 billion over the next three years to remain the default search engine on Firefox. Google wouldn't pay that money if it didn't recognize that Bing was a formidable competitor. 2011 was a good year for Bing; I expect 2012 to be even better.

Obamas go to church, dine in for Christmas in Hawaii (Reuters)

HONOLULU, Hawaii (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama spent a low-key Christmas Day with his wife and daughters in Hawaii, going to church and thanking U.S. troops for their service before hosting friends for dinner at the first family's rented beach house.

The Obamas started opening gifts around 8 a.m. on Sunday and then ate breakfast and sang carols together before heading to the chapel at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii for a Christmas service, the White House said.

Far from Washington officialdom, and making the most of a bright, warm day, Obama dressed casually in a polo shirt and khaki pants to church and Michelle and their daughters Sasha and Malia wore summer dresses.

After a few hours back at their multi-million-dollar temporary home, the president and Michelle Obama returned to the base to shake hands, hold babies and pose for pictures with hundreds of sailors and marines stationed there.

"In the evening, the First Family and friends will celebrate with a Christmas dinner at home," a White House official said. Sam Kass, the White House chef, is spending the holidays with the Obamas and was expected to do the cooking.

Sony VPL-HW30ES

The Sony VPL-HW30ES ($3,700 street), is one of several recently announced models that, as a group, are about to ratchet up once again the features you should expect in a home theater projector. About two years ago, the price for 1080p resolution fell dramatically. That was followed by 1080p models with 3D. However, the 3D worked only at 720p and needed a video converter to work with most sources. The VPL-HW30ES and other new generation models offer 1080p in 2D and 3D, and they work directly with Blu-ray players, FIOS, and the like. Most important, the Sony projector in particular offers high enough image quality and enough capability to more than justify the price.

The VPL-HW30ES is much cheaper than Sony's previous lowest-cost 1080p 3D projector, which was about $10,000. However, it's more expensive than some other current choices. In particular, it costs more than twice as much as the Optoma HD33 ($1,500 street, 4 stars) that I recently reviewed. And note that the VPL-HW30ES?s price doesn't even include the cost of the external 3D emitter ($80 street) or 3D glasses ($130 street each).

Sony also sells the projector as the Sony VPL-HW30AES with the emitter and two sets of glasses, but at $3,999 (street), it doesn't save much over buying the pieces separately. Either way the projector represents a fairly serious investment by most people's standards.

What makes the VPL-HW30ES potentially worth the extra cost compared with the Optoma HD33 is a combination of features. Most significant is that it's built around SXRD panels, Sony's version of LCOS. The technology avoids both the screen-door effect of LCD projectors and the rainbow artifacts that single-chip DLP projectors like the HD33 can show. (The screen door effect refers to a visible grid defining the pixels, which you can see if you sit close to the screen. The rainbow effect consists of light areas breaking up into little red-green-blue rainbows when you shift your gaze or an object moves on screen.)

The VPL-HW30ES also offers conveniences like vertical and horizontal lens shift that the HD33 leaves out, a 1.6x zoom lens, 2D to 3D conversion, excellent image quality for both 2D and 3D, and enough flexibility in brightness to make it appropriate both for a traditional home theater with theater dark lighting and for rooms with some ambient light.

Setup
The VPL-HW30ES is a relatively large beast, at 7.1 by 16.1 by 18.4 inches (HWD), and it weighs 22.1 pounds. However, that's not unusual for a home theater projector. Two strictly 2D Editors' Choices, for example, the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8700 UB ($2,199 direct, 4 stars) and the Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8350 ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), are both only a little smaller.

Basic setup, meaning connecting cables and getting the projector working, is easy. The 1.6x manual zoom gives you lots of flexibility in how far you can put it from the screen for a given size image, and the horizontal and vertical lens shift gives you flexibility in positioning it left, right, up, or down relative to the screen. The vertical lens shift can move the image by roughly 65% of a screen height up or down from the midpoint. The horizontal shift can move it by about 25% left or right.

Connectors on the side of the projector include two HDMI ports, one VGA port, a set of three RCA phono plugs for component video, an RS-232 serial port for controlling the projector from a computer or control box, and an RJ-45 for the external 3D IR emitter.

Setting up the emitter can be a challenge, because you need a clear line of sight from the emitter to the proprietary 3D glasses. Pointing it so the signal will bounce off the screen can work, but it also leads to the glasses losing sync occasionally, which can be disconcerting. An additional complication is that the manual specifies that you have to use a category 7 network cable, which isn't included, to connect the emitter, and it can't be more than 15 meters long. I used a category 6 cable successfully, but it was only 3 feet long.

More Setup
Once you have the basic setup finished, you're ready for the hard part. First, you'll want to make sure that the brightness is appropriate for the screen size and lighting conditions. With the 78-inch wide (92-inch diagonal) image we normally use for testing, for example, the default settings for the projector were about right for a moderate level of ambient light, but way too bright for comfortable viewing in theater dark lighting.

You can lower the brightness by setting the lamp to low, which also increases rated lamp life from 2,000 to 3,000 hours. You can also set the iris control to manual and then adjust it to lower the brightness further. Between the two settings, I had no trouble getting the brightness low enough to be suitable for theater dark conditions.

You'll also need to experiment with some of the more advanced options to decide which settings you prefer. In particular, you'll want to play with the MotionFlow setting, which adds interpolated frames to reduce judder, the slightly jerky motion that's inherent in the standard 24 frame per second film speed.

As with Optoma's equivalent PureMotion feature, MotionFlow works to smooth the image, but the highest setting also introduces artifacts that I found distracting. The low setting was the best compromise for my tastes, but you may feel differently.

You may even prefer to turn the feature off entirely. Adding interpolated frames to remove judder also gives movies the look and feel of live video, which you may or may not consider desirable. You may also decide that you like the feature for watching, say, sports, but not for watching movies. The only way to find out is to experiment with the settings.

Finally, for setup, you should adjust the color to give you the best possible image. In theory, you can say the same for any home theater projector. If you're going to pay this much for one, however, you'd be foolish not to set it up just so. Getting the color right requires a fair level of knowledge, and some equipment that most people don't own, which means that you may want to pay someone to do it for you.

2D and 3D Image Quality
For judging 2D image quality in my tests, I used both DVDs upscaled to 1080p and Blu-ray discs. In both cases, the image lived up to Sony's reputation for great high-quality images. The VPL-HW30ES did a good job with all of our toughest test clips, maintaining shadow detail (detail based on shading in dark areas), doing a good job with skin tones, and generally avoiding problems that the clips are meant to bring out. For less demanding?and more typical?scenes, the image was excellent. I saw subtle levels of noise in large solid areas, like a blank wall, but much less than I saw with, for example, the HD33.

The 3D image quality earns much the same praise overall. I saw a touch of crosstalk (the ghost image that shows when the frame meant for one eye shows through to the other eye as well). However, I didn't see it often enough to find it bothersome. And note that you can reduce crosstalk by adjusting the 3D Glasses Brightness and 3D depth effect settings?still more options you'll need to experiment with to find the right settings for you. The projector also offers 2D to 3D conversion that works as promised.

By any measure the Sony VPL-HW30ES qualifies as an impressive projector. Keep in mind that as of this writing there a number of other 1080p 3D projectors that have been announced, including models from Epson and Panasonic that I'm waiting to get my hands on to review. But regardless of what else is waiting in the wings or is actually available by the time you read this, if you want excellent quality 2D and 3D without any risk of seeing a rainbow effect, the Sony VPL-HW30ES stands ready to deliver the image quality you're looking for.

Blame it on Kim Kardashian? Humphries most disliked player in NBA

2:04 p.m. EST, December 22, 2011

In terms of being the most disliked player in the NBA, LeBron James can't keep up with a Kardashian ex-husband.

New Jersey Nets forward Kris Humphries ? also known for his short-lived marriage to reality star Kim Kardashian ? beat out James for the dubious distinction, according to a survey conducted by Nielsen and E-Poll Market Research that appeared on Forbes.com.

Humphries took in a 50 percent dislike percentage, topping James' 48 percent.

Players must have a minimum 10 percent public awareness level to have been considered, according to Forbes.com.

Kobe Bryant, Tony Parker, Metta World Peace (formerly Ron Artest), Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, Paul Pierce, Dwyane Wade and Lamar Odom completed the top 10.

While James stoked the fans' ire after his highly publicized "decision" to take his talents to South Beach and join the Miami Heat last season, Humphries emerged as one of the league's top rebounders.

Humphries stumbled off the court after a lavish multimillion-dollar, made-for-TV wedding lasted just 2 1/2 months, leading to speculation that it was a publicity stunt.

Penn St AD: 'Deliberate, measured' coach search

(AP) ? Penn State may still be without a replacement for fired coach Joe Paterno by the time the Nittany Lions play in the TicketCity Bowl on Jan. 2

The six-person search committee is taking a "very deliberate and measured approach to the process in order to identify the coach that best fits the requirements of the position," acting athletic director Dave Joyner said Thursday in a written statement.

School president Rodney Erickson and Joyner had both said they hoped to have a new coach before No. 24 Penn State's bowl game.

But Thursday, Joyner said a new coach would be introduced "at the appropriate time," and the statement offered no specific timeline.

Erickson was out of town Thursday for the holidays. Spokesman Bill Mahon said Joyner was providing Erickson with regular updates.

"I think they have both emphasized the most important element here is to get the right coach, not speed up the timing of the search," Mahon said. "There is no update on possible timing."

Longtime defensive coordinator Tom Bradley has been running the program on an interim basis since school trustees fired Paterno on Nov. 9 in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno is not a target of an investigation into the Sandusky case by the state attorney general's office, though he was dismissed amid mounting criticism that school leaders should have done more to prevent alleged abuse. Sandusky, who has maintained his innocence, is awaiting trial.

Making a good hire, and soon, is generally seen as a critical step to secure the future of Penn State's storied football program. A couple of recruits have already revoked their verbal commitments to the school in the wake of the Sandusky scandal.

Erickson said earlier this month one of the top criteria in the coaching search is "how that person would fit into the value system of Penn State, which clearly has to be honesty, integrity and commitment to excellence in academics."

According to Joyner, the school "is continuing to talk with individuals that we're interested in and work through the interview process." He called it a "very important hire for Penn State."

Bradley and defensive line coach Larry Johnson are among those who have been interviewed.

Green Bay quarterbacks coach Tom Clements was scheduled to have a phone interview last week, USA Today has reported. At Packers practice Thursday, Clements declined comment on whether he was interested in the job and would not confirm if he had interviewed for it.

Nebraska's Bo Pelini also emerged this week on the seemingly endless rumored list of potential college-level prospects. Pelini after practice Tuesday called the reports irresponsible and untrue, and said he had not interviewed at Penn State.

As for the Nittany Lions, players have gone home for the holidays. They are scheduled to regroup Monday in Dallas to prepare for the bowl game against No. 20 Houston.

Brooke Mueller Seeks to Block TMZ From Court

Brooke Mueller is seeking to block popular celebrity news site TMZ from live streaming her arraignment in Aspen, Colo., on cocaine charges. The reasoning behind that?

To preserve her dignity. Three words: L.O.L.

Pointing fingers at the website, attorneys are asking a judge to make the first court date in her cocaine case TMZ-free, in order to take attention off the case.

Mmmyeah. Not sure it works like that.

New Brooke Mueller Mug Shot

Brooke's lawyer has filed legal papers trying to block the site from taping the proceedings in Aspen, where she was busted for cocaine possession this month.

Her camp says video will "unduly detract from the solemnity, decorum and dignity of the court" and sans TMZ, "this case may soon become less interesting."

With all due respect, Brooke, the best way to make your life less "interesting" would be to not show up at pawn shops or WALK AROUND WITH FOUR GRAMS OF COKE.

Allegedly.

Chess robots have trouble grasping the game

Duncan Graham-Rowe, contributor

AB21225.jpg(Image: Jeffrey Sylvester/Getty Images)

Deep Blue's victory over Gary Kasparov in 1997 may have shown how computers can outsmart people, but if the game is taken into the physical world, humans still win hands down.

That's because, for all their software smarts, robots remain clumsy at manipulating real-world objects. A robotic chess competition held in August, for example, showed that even robotic arms used for precise work on industrial manufacturing lines have trouble when asked to negotiate a noisy, chaotic real-world environment.

The contest, held at the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence annual conference in San Francisco, California, had a number of automatons competing to see who could best move pieces quickly, accurately and legally in accordance with the rules of chess.

Some teams used vision systems to identify where pieces were, but none attempted to distinguish between a rook and a knight, for example. Instead they relied upon remembering where pieces were last placed to identify them and move them accordingly.

The bots quickly ran into snags - their vision systems often misread moves, which led to confusion as to what piece had moved, and where the other pieces were on the board.

One approach, by robotics company Road Narrows, used a commercially available fixed robotic arm normally used for light industrial applications without any vision at all. The winner was a team led by Mike Ferguson at the University of Albany, in New York, which had a mobile robot with an arm attached. Despite the many variables introduced when moving a robot around, the droid's vision system managed to keep track of the board and pieces as it moved about, says Mike Stilman, one of the event's organisers, of Georgia Institute of Technology, in Atlanta.

But even Ferguson's bot is a long way from earning the title "grand master" - all the teams' chess tactics came from a standard open source program that wouldn't have given Deep Blue a run for its money. But the creation of a software champion chess program wasn't just about winning, Stilman says - it was about gaining an insight into how the human mind works in order to build smarter machines. By bringing the challenge into the real world, the hope is to do the same for the physical problems of robotics, he says.

Judges: UK has 4 weeks to free US-held Pakistani (AP)

LONDON ? British judges on Wednesday gave the government four weeks to obtain the release of a Pakistani man held in U.S. custody in Afghanistan ? a ruling that could make for prickly discussions between British officials and their American counterparts.

The ruling comes nearly a week after the U.K.-legal charity Reprieve won its habeas corpus petition claiming that Yunus Rahmatullah's detention lacked sufficient cause or evidence, and that British forces violated international law when they handed him over to American troops nearly eight years ago.

It is one of the few cases where lawyers have been successful in their appeals to free a detainee from the detention center at the sprawling U.S. air base in Bagram, where, unlike the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, terror suspects and detainees lack access to lawyers.

British Appeals Court justices said the British government has until Jan. 18 to obtain freedom for Rahmatullah, who was originally accused of being a member of the militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The appeals court order is final ? meaning that Rahmatullah must be released. But the British government can appeal to the Supreme Court to debate the issue of habeas corpus. The appeal, however, would be largely academic and the government would have to bear the legal costs.

"The only question left is: Does the US keep the bargains it makes with its closest ally?" Reprieve legal director Cori Crider said. "The Obama administration has said it wishes to restore U.S. standing abroad and to bring the U.S. back into line with the Geneva Conventions. Well, there is no time like the present."

Britain's Foreign Office said it was in discussions with the U.S. but declined to say if it had specifically Rahmatullah be released. The U.S. Department of Defense said it was reviewing the decision and may comment further later Wednesday.

Sky apples stun English motorists

Sky Apples? Motorists in England were pelted by apples falling from the sky, and were left to speculate as to the cause.

In the make-believe town of Chewandswallow, it rains soup and juice, and sometimes it snows ice cream. But who would have imagined that the world created by Judi Barrett in her bestselling children's book "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" would come true one evening in Coventry, England?

On Monday night, it started raining apples.

?I honestly don?t know where the apples could have come from,? Brian?Meakins, a retired truck driver told UK?s Daily Mail.?

More than 100 apples fell from the sky onto car roofs and windshields of motorists who were traveling through a busy intersection?in the English city.? The bizarre phenomenon caused traffic congestion, left many wondering what had happened.? ??

A motorist told the Daily Mail that the apples fell out of nowhere.? ?They were small and green and hit the bonnet hard,? she added.? ?Everyone had to stop their cars suddenly.??

Bewildered by the incident, Mr. Meakins speculated:? ?At first I assumed kids must have thrown them because we do get the occasional egg and apple thrown.? ?But there?s way too many for that,? he continued.

British media also puzzled over the rain of apples.

Some speculated that a mini-tornado sucked up the apples from an orchard and deposited the fruit over Coventry. Another theory was they the fell from a cargo crate in an passing aircraft.

BBC ?s Magazine reported that this is not the first time it has precipitated something other than H20. The site said that frogs had fallen from the sky in the past in Llanddewi, Powys as well as in Croydon, south London.? The? BBC also reported that back in 2000 scores of dead silver sprats dropped from the sky in the coastal resort of Great Yarmouth.

Paul Sieveking, co-editor of the Fortean Times, a magazine devoted to the analysis of strange global phenomena, told BBC that 300 apples came down in 1984? in Accrington, Lancashire.

However, Dr. Lisa Jardine-Wright, a physicist at Cambridge University described the event as unusual but not inexplicable.

?A tornado which has swept through an orchard will be strong enough to 'suck up' small objects like a vacuum [cleaner]. These small objects would then be deposited back to earth as 'rain' when the whirlwind loses its energy," she told BBC.

LG Optimus Slider (Virgin Mobile)

The LG Optimus Slider ($199.99) is an average, low-end Android smartphone. It has good voice quality and a roomy QWERTY keyboard, but it's certainly not going to thrill Android geeks. Factor in Virgin Mobile's low-cost service plans starting at $35 per month, though, and it's worth talking about. Although this isn't a four-star phone when compared to options on other carriers, it's the best keyboarded smartphone for Virgin, and that makes worthy of it our Editors' Choice award.

Design, Call Quality, and Plans
The Optimus Slider measures 4.5 by 2.3 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 5.5 ounces. It's a bit bulky, in part because of the large keyboard. It's made of dark gray plastic, with a soft touch back cover. The 3.2-inch, 320-by-480 pixel capacitive touch screen is?bright enough, though it could certainly benefit from higher resolution. But it's fine for most tasks, and compatible with most of the apps in the Android Market.

There are four physical function keys beneath the display, and the phone slides open to reveal a four-row QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard is comfortable and roomy with large, well-separated plastic keys. Typing long messages is easy on the Slider.

The Slider is a dual-band EV-DO Rev. A (850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi support. Reception is good (Virgin uses Sprint's network), and call quality is solid overall. Voices sound clear in the phone's earpiece, though a bit thready. Calls made with the phone sound crisp and natural, with very good background noise cancellation. Calls sounded clear through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4.5 stars), and voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth without training. The speakerphone sounds a bit thin and doesn't go loud enough for outdoor use. Battery life was great at 8 hours, 17 minutes of talk time.

The biggest selling point here is Virgin Mobile's inexpensive pricing plans. You can sign up for an unlimited text, data, and Web plan for as little as $35 per month with 300 voice minutes. 1200 minutes costs $45, and unlimited voice calling brings the price to $55 per month. If you're more of a message and data user than a talker, that $35 plan is hard to beat?especially considering that a data plan alone will cost you $30 on a carrier like Verizon Wireless, and for that price you're limited to 2GB of data per month! Virgin does have one downside for heavy data users: there's no tethering or hotspot mode, so you can't use a laptop with this connection.

Apps and OS
The Optimus Slider is running Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). There are a few minor customizations from LG, but this is pretty close to stock-Android. There are five home screens you can swipe between that come preloaded with a few useful apps and widgets. There's also some non-deletable bloatware, but it's kept to a minimum, and navigating around the phone feels swift and responsive. The Slider offers all of Android's usual benefits, including free, voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS navigation, excellent email capabilities, and a powerful WebKit browser. It should work with most of the 250,000+ third-party apps available in the Android Market.

The phone is powered by an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7627T processor. It's no speed demon, but it pulled in average benchmark scores for a lower-end Android device. It should be up to task for most common uses, but count it out for high-end gaming. Also, don't assume this phone will get an Android 4.0 "Ice Cream Sandwich" update.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
There's a microSD card slot beneath the back phone's cover. A 2GB card comes preloaded; my 32 and 64GB cards worked fine as well. There's also 156MB of free internal storage. Music tracks sounded good through both wired headphones and Altec Lansing Backbeat?Bluetooth headphones ($99.99, 3.5 stars). I was able to play AAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, and WMA test files, but not FLAC. Standalone video support isn't as good. I was only able to play MP4 and H.264 test files, at resolutions up to 800-by-480. Audio for videos was slightly out of sync over Bluetooth.

The 3.2-megapixel auto-focus camera has no flash. Test photos were average, at best. There's a long, 1.3 second shutter delay, and photos taken indoors show average detail, but colors are dull. Outdoor shots in bright light are a little better, but still underwhelming. The camcorder records videos at a choppy 13 frames per second indoors and a slightly better 15 frames per second outside.

Video support and camera aside, the LG Optimus Slider is a solid keyboarded smartphone, and a really good value when you factor in Virgin's inexpensive plan pricing. We haven't reviewed it on Virgin, but the?Samsung Intercept?(3 stars) is less expensive, at $79.99, though it's running an older version of Android on a slower data network. If you're willing to drop the keyboard, your best bet is the Motorola Triumph?($239.99, 4 stars), which features a much larger, sharper display, and a faster processor. But if you value texting above all else, stick with the Slider.

Benchmarks
Continuous talk time: 8 hours 17 minutes
